What's the best cheap riding lawn mower (got to have hydrostatic transmission)

Well, it looks like you move pretty fast, but if you haven't decided, I'd recommend looking at the John Deeres. I have an LX255, which isn't terribly expensive, has hydro, easy to remove deck, etc. I'm really happy with it.

I too would like to acknowledge all the common sense and just excellent advice that Bird has given on TBN. Keep helping and providing all your wisdom, it is much appreciated!!!!!!!!

Ya might want to add a little personalization before the fel is on it.

Can't tell which I laughed harder at, Harv's FEL, or your personalization.

Harv can work miracles with this stuff. I have to re-learn everytime that I do something with it. Can't get off of TBN long enough to figure it all out./w3tcompact/icons/grin.gif

ByuBill, I just now got around to seeing that "personalization"./w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

I've already broken in (and broke) that lawnmower./w3tcompact/icons/frown.gif I decided to mow my yard yesterday shorter than I've been mowing it with the tractor and finish mower, so I deliberately set the deck pretty low; forgot about that stump I had cut off almost at ground level./w3tcompact/icons/frown.gif I'd never bent a lawnmower blade before, but I made a tiller out of that one. But hey, I found out that 21.5hp Briggs has plenty of power./w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif So, after a 100+ mile trip to Sears and back to get new blades, I finished mowing the yard.

I guess my bad luck was someone else's good luck though. I was cruising along at 60 mph, coming back from Sears, when I saw an old man (not too many folks I can call "old"/w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif) standing in the borrow ditch looking at his riding mower that he had driven into a hole at the end of a culvert, and he was trying to figure out how he was going to get it out. So I turned around and went back and helped him get it out.

Garry, I don't think I'm unusual, especially in a group of people like those on TBN, but you know I haven't found many things that are just more fun for me than helping someone else. I really think maybe I'm selfish; do it more for ME, and the satisfaction I get from it, than for them.

Incidentally, the young couple next door to us would certainly appreciate everyone's prayers. They had a baby (boy) on 2/24/02, came home one day, back to the hospital with unidentified problems, home I think two or three days, then back to the local hospital on 3/6/02, and after much probing and testing, transferred via ambulance to Dallas to the Children's Medical Center for more tests, and since they were out of Intensive Care beds, air lifted to Temple, and after many more tests, transferred to Austin for heart surgery. It seems that the baby was born (full term) with a hole between the chambers of the heart and a faulty valve. So it's had two heart surgeries, the parents have been staying at its side, or in the Ronald McDonald house for nearly a month now (since 3/6/02), and we still have no idea whether it's going to survive; still in Intensive Care with IVs, tubes, etc. I don't think I can imagine a more stressful, heartbreaking situation for a young couple.

In the meantime, not much I can do, but at least I'm taking care of their little Welsh Corgi and got their yard cleaned up and mowed.

I hope that you don't mind me painting your new 'sub-compact'/w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif Didn't do a very good job./w3tcompact/icons/frown.gif Maybe I need to take lessons from Harv. Sorry that you broke it already but, my mother 'may she rest in peace' always said that everything happens for a reason. I guess that it was just meant to be, for you to help the 'old' man get his rider out of the ditch.
If you could figure out how to add about 1000lbs to the 'Bird Mobile' you would have 'one mean mower'./w3tcompact/icons/eyes.gif
Good luck, and your neighbors are in my prayers.

Oh, man, Bird! Two days after my daughter was born, we had to whisk her to the hospital where she then spent 5 days in intensive care. Her problem was "merely" an extreme case of jaundice, but it was the longest 5 days of my life. My heart really goes out to that family.

I'll bet. Fortunately for me, I can only imagine what it's like, and I know it's got to be tough; for the kids and parents both.

Bird,
I did the same thing not 2 days after I bought my Sears lawn tractor. Hit a stump and bent the blade. After that I went around the yard and marked all the stumps that might be a problem. When we moved to our house I was glad to see the only thing I had to avoid was the roots of the 2 large pines in front of our house. I put a new set of blades on the tractor, and sure enough, my wife mowed too close to the pine tree and hit a root. Bent that one pretty good to.

I will ask my friends and family to include your neighbors in thier prayers.

Hey, Pitbull, Devildog, (and others, I'm sure). That baby was moved from intensive care to a room a few days ago and is coming home this evening! Thanks for everyone's prayers. Ten days ago, we weren't too hopeful that it was going to survive.

And it just started raining here again. Sure glad I got my yard, and theirs, mowed and trimmed yesterday and the garden tilled this morning./w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

Yep, Harv, they just got home about an hour ago; two happy kids and a cute, tiny baby (hmm, come to think of it, I call'em kids, but they're in their 30s), and I just now saw some grandparents come sailing down the road and in their driveway./w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

Bird-

I may have missed it, what are your plans now that you are tractorless? How do you intend to till your garden?

If you are ever near Detroit again you could always stop by and drive my tractor around...../w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif.

Paul

ps I'm glad the baby is doing ok
