Blackberries and Grapes

Do the hardwood mulch and the coffee grounds help acidify the soil? The place I bought my blueberries told me to plant them in a hole entirely filled with peat moss, since that would provide the acid pH the blueberries like. I did that, but I had already prepared planting beds with lots of organic and which I had acidified with sulfur. I've got Duke, Bluecrop and Elliot, and one Jersey. I bought 10 plants from a place here in Missouri, and then added one Bluecrop and the Jersey because I had the space. The local plants were nice and big, but this year the best looking plant is the bluecrop from WalMart.....go figure.

The coffee grounds adds acid to the soil.

My grandmother used to put coffee grounds on everything she grew. All her flowers and stuff looked great.

I just can't drink that much coffee.

There is a blueberry farm close to me and the family that runs it told me I could have all the plants I wanted to start my farm. The man that ran it passed away a couple of weeks ago but told me to take my PHD and dig hole about 1 foot deep. Fill them with mulch and plant in those holes the next year.

I am hoping his family keeps the blueberry farm going. We are good friends with them and may help with mowing and such.

I am sure it helps, and it also adds a slow release of nutrients as the mulch decomposes. One thing to think about is how the water is in the area where you are planting. If you have standing water or soggy soil during the spring you may want to mound your blueberries up to keep the roots from rotting. I had to do this to all of mine. I made a mix of manure, peat moss, and topsoil and planted them on top of this and then covered with the mulch. They doubled in size from where they were last year.

Sorry to hear that he died...I hope they keep the blueberry farm going.

We don't drink that much coffee either.

One thing you can put on them that has acid in it and really helps them is, the regular "Miracle Grow".

I put it on all my fruit trees and other plants.
