Using leather for seals? Guess is would be easier to rebuild (make your own) but does it hold as much pressure? Just curious.

The "CR" in CR Seals=Chicago Rawhide (Now SKF Seals) Lots of seals used to be made of rawhide. As far as holding as much pressure, not likely. Lots of industrial hydraulics are over 10,000 psi now. Don't think rawhide would hold up to that.

I've seen leather packings in applications up to 6,000 psi. They still make the same style, only in fabric. The only reason for the switch was Bob Barker's protesting. Don't you remember the end of every show, "The Price Is Right?" "Now remember all you mechanics, no leather shoes, no leather cylinder packings, and remember to have your pet spayed or neutered." Well......... not really..............okay....... maybe not at all. No, really, leather is not as consistent as fabric. That's why the switch. The leather/fabric style seal is used in applications up to 10,000 psi. Leather would hold it. But, do you want PETA protesting your cylinders?

Thanks guys, appreciate the humor bantering and the info mixed in. Just have been a little fascinated with how things 'used' to be. Yes, i do have some of the foxfire books.
