I took the other front tire/wheel off of the tractor and sprayed
it with PB blaster to loosen the bead. It didn't take much to
break the bead loose, I actually just pushed down on the side wall
and the bead broke loose. The rim has a little rust but not
as bad as I though for a 40 year old rim. I sanded the rim
and sprayed it with primmer. Here are a few pictures of
the rim and the new tires. If you look close at the pictures
you'll see the new tire is a foot bigger than the old one.

I finally finished installing the new tires. I am pretty sure that all
four of the tires on this tractor are the original tires from 1978.
The rear tires still have plenty of tread left but they are old and have
weather cracks. As long as they hold air and don't rip open, I'll keep using them.
Here are a few pictures. One picture shows a new front tire next to an
old one. the old front tires were worn much more than the rear tires and
I think the previous owner always drove this thing in 4 wheel drive no
matter what surface he was driving on. I can tell you that this thing does
not like being driven in 4 wheel drive when making sharp turns and it does
not like driving on DRY paved streets or roads while in 4 wheel drive.
I think the previous owner was always in 4 wheel drive and thats
why the front tires are worn so bad and I also believe being in 4 wheel
all of the time is what cause the damage to the transmission.

Here are a few more pictures. After I got the new tires on the rims
I masked off the tire and sprayed the rims before airing up the tires.
For the record, I aired up the tires and checked for leaks and fitment
first. I then let the air out and was able to push the bead down
to get the paper over the tire so I could spray paint them.
I also have a few pictures of my gang mower fixed up and usable.
I mow the back yard with the gang mower.

Looks great. Thanks for sharing. Good tip on masking the tire for painting. I've also been told automatic transmission fluid will remove overspray on tires in case you don't mask but never tried it yet.

A tip I got to help with painting wheels with the tires fitted was to use a pack of playing cards, they slip in between the wheel the tire bead, plus they can be used over and over,.

Thanks for the tip. I never though of playing cards but they are thin and rigid
so that makes sense.

So I was changing the oil last week and I found a gear oil leak
at the front axle pivot point. The front axle housing has two bushings
in it for the pivot bolt. The bushings each have two o-rings, one
on either end of the bushing to seal around the pivot bolt
and the housing. The leak is not bad but it bugs me. Time to
buy some o-rings. It looks like this was designed for the ring
gear to sling gear oil up onto the pivot bolt to keep it lubed.
And the o-rings are to keep oil in and dirt and water or whatever out.
Here are a few pictures. I also installed
a pressure gauge on the pressure line from hydraulic pump.
I wanted to see what the pressure was when lifting my dirt
scoop when it was full. The pressure from the pump that
I rebuilt was around 1600/1700 lbs and that is around the
pressure that's listed for my tractor.

Happy New Year.

Here are a few pictures taken while I was working my compost pile.
I switched the hydraulic lines for the lift cylinder of the plow
so I could use the other circuit of my two spool valve.
This is the first time I have used the other circuit and it
looks like this circuit has a float feature on it. I need
to look into this to be sure its suppose to do this or
is it just not setup right. When I rebuilt this tractor
6 or so years ago I just started using the right hand
circuit for the lift cylinder by chance and it worked
so that's how I left it. While tractor was warming up
today so I could stir the compost pile I switched
the hookup for the cylinder to the other circuit
just to cycle that side for the heck of it. If it
is a float feature then that would be cool.
