I'm dying to know - how did you get down safely?
Well I did a dumb one. I have a lawn tractor stored in a shed with no power so I set up a portable 60 watt solar panel on the south side of the shed with a solar controller attached to the tractor battery. I had an ammeter wired in so I could check on it every now and then. Yesterday I went to start it and no cranking at all. I hit the battery with a jumper pack and got way too many sparks. So, on a hunch, I measured the voltage across the tractor battery. Negative 13 volts. Huh? Negative? Yup, I'd miswired the solar panel input where I'd added an SAE plug, so it was reverse polarity. The battery was charged correctly when I put it to bed, so I'm amazed that the solar panel wore it down and reverse charged it. Right now I'm discharging the battery and see if if I can reverse it again, but it is probably a boat anchor. :ashamed:
I actually did to use it that way one day, but I read on line that a reversed battery will deteriorate very quickly. I'm no chemist, but the explanation seemed plausible.Could you just reverse the battery cables and continue using the battery like that?
Voltage is measured according to a base reference point. If your house is at ground level, your basement floor is at negative 8 feet. How could you have a negative 13 volts? Wouldn't it just be zero volts?
Just reverse the leads on your meter and it will read fineHow could you have a negative 13 volts? Wouldn't it just be zero volts?
