I need a little advice on a boom pole for my tractor. I have looked at Tractor supply and they have a Tarter 200 on sale for $188.00 plus tax. It looks like the average boom pole I am familiar with. I think it says it will lift 500lbs on the end and 1000lbs on the middle hook. Then I see where they have a heavy duty one Tarter 300 that says it will lift 1000lbs on the end and 2000lbs on the middle loop. I am skidding logs and lifting them(with a log tong) on and off one of 2 trailers(one is a landscape trailer 5x10 ft.one axel, height about 30") and the other is an equipment trailer(3 axel) 8x20ft. about 25" high. The HD boom pole is $431 plus tax plus $100 shipping and they will only let you order it online. The $188 one I can go pickup at Tractor Supply. I usually like to get HD stuff as I am generally pretty rough on tools and things. I should have been a tool tester in life. I was a plumber, electrician, and home builder. We went thru a lot of tools and can destroy them with the best. So do yall think I need the HD model boom pole or could I get by with the standard model? Thanks for your opinion,Dave

You'll need the longer reach to load your logs onto the trailer, especially the higher rows, so I suggest the larger strength. Of course, you'll need a LOT of front weight to raise a load at that distance, AND the hydraulic pressure to back it up. If you have a loader, make a jib boom for it.

None on the used market? Just like box blades they have no moving parts and are typicaly prety stought units.

Logs are surprisingly heavy. To lift them up onto a trailer & clear the sides will require the log to be out at the end of the boompole. Go with the HD build, keep weight on the front end & respect the limit of the equipment. None of us want to see more pictures of broken steel.

I'd also consider side loading strength as well as the vertical capacity. Wouldn't be unusual to snag something on a turn.

When I try to rationalize a premium choice, I try to factor in the resale value too.
