Grading Box blade for the BX24?

I bought a 48" KK box blade for my bx1500 from TSC, mainly for ballast, but I have done a little digging with it. I can't get too aggressive without bogging down, but I would think that the extra hp in the 24 should be enough to pull reasonably well. If your ground is like mine though, rocks are going to be your problem. I guess once you find them, you can dig them up with the hoe, but that's going to mean switching the BB and BH on and off.

More and more vintners are buying up the farms around here and planting grapes. They rent a D11R from Holt in Stockton and rip through this concrete hard hardpan to about 8'. I've stopped by the road a few times just to watch it. That thing is one monster machine.

That reminds me of a ripper set-up I saw years ago ('70s) of two D8s pulling a single ripper tooth about 8' deep. It was giving them D8s a good workout.

Hp is only one of several considerations. A diesel will generate more torque than a gasoline engine of the same hp (this is related to piston bore/stroke ratios and other factors). An extra low gear range and larger diameter drive wheels both increase the torque as well. With enough hp, there is still a contest of resistance between the place you are snagged and the tires. If there is more resistance at the snag point, you will just spin, no matter how much hp or torque you have. For this reason, you need two more things things: ag tires, and enough weight on them to pin them down. So there are many factors in the equation: hp, torque (involving piston stroke, wheel dia., gear ratio), resistance of tires, mass atop tires all vs. resistance at point of snag. Then you can get into other variables if you want to: resistance of moist or pulverized clay vs. solidified clay, etc. To summarize: don't count on hp alone to necessarily overcome the resistance.

Hi all:

Just remember the tsc 48" box blade in cat is for the narrow cat 1 hitch if you have a fixed quik attach system you are going to need longer pins and probably spread the arms on BB about 2 inches. learned by mistake

I just hooked up the 48" 420lb box blade on the BX24 today and ripped through about 2/3 of a mile of fresh trails. I couldn't believe that it ripped out and dragged several soccer ball sized rocks without even slowing down. The soil conditions are absolutely perfect right now here in Western Washington for box blading.
I had used the box blade last year at my house to put in a lawn in tougher soil and wasn't nearly as impressed at the results. Maybe its not the soil conditions....maybe I've just had more practice :D
