Hi,

I need a box blade.

The quote I got locally for a Woods HB60, which has the floating, but lockable, rear cutting edge, was $705. Plus tax, delivered to my door.

Is this reasonable or outrageous? Beats me...

But I wonder if I should go with something like the Woods R1060 roll over model.

I want to buy one time and keep for 20 years.

At this point I don't really understand the advantages of the various possibilities.

My tractor is a Kubota B2910. I want to level ground and plant grass...make some trails in the woods perhaps. Private use, none commercial...for what that is worth.

We never can predict the future though. What is the best way to go not knowing what I MIGHT want to do in five years?

I would rather spend extra now than do it again later.

It is really hard asking a question about something one knows almost nothing about! Big time!

HELP!

Thanks for any input...I just don't want to make a mistake and buy the wrong thing...and I do want to buy something in the next week or so.

I was thinking of going with First Choice but have not had much luck making that happen. Not sure if they have what I need anyway...I bet they do have something that would work fine for me though...too bad where I live there are no dealers.

Hi Bill:

I'm bought the Woods GB72 (welded scaper blades) this spring. $512 brand new, it works just fine behind my TC29. You mentioned getting a 60" one, I would suggest a 65" or 72", so as to extend just beyond the width of your rear tires.

Bill,
First Choice will work with you. They'll get a Purchase Order from the nearest dealer and have one shipped to you. At least thats what I'm hearing.

I have a 60" First Choice box blade and I'm very happy with it. I agree you should get something that will cover your tire tire width. Regardless of the size you choose, do yourself a favor and check out First Choice.

I just saw a dealer near me advertising the very box blade I have for $285 so I assume that's the market price on them here. I know they're made in IL so it might be a tad higher where you are. You really owe it to yourself to check out First Choice.

If you'd like to see some pictures and comments on the First Choice product, you can go to <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.tractorbynet.com/cgi-bin/compact/showthreaded.pl?Cat=&Board=implement&Number=163675&page=&view=&sb=&o=&vc=1#Post163675>this link about my First Choice box blade.</A>

Russ,

I measured my rear tires and they are about 53 inches outside edge to outside edge, on the B2910, with R4s. How much beyond them, on each side do I need to go?

A 60 inch box blade would stick out about 3 inches on each side. Is this enough?

Gary and all,

I began looking at First Choice as my first choice several weeks ago. I hope something works out, and have been in touch with Pieter there...we will see what happens.

I was hoping to find a dealer nearby that sold first choice products, as I am not sure I want to deal with a direct shipment. I don't have a good place to unload a truck myself, even though I do have palet forks for my loader [la402 on a B2910 Kubota].

In the meantime I am pricing alternatives also...seems like my dealer is out of the ball park on that HB60 he quoted me.

Bill, some of the difference you see in pricing has to do with the model you are looking at. The HB60 is considered a medium duty box that weighs 462 lbs. Weight is a wonderful thing when you start talking box blades. The lighter the blade the more likely it is to bounce rather than cut on hard surfaces. I am sure the Woods blade would be bullet proof on a B2910.

That being said I think you would find some of the other box blades at half the price very workable. I haven’t seen the First Choice boxes but the specs. show the light duty 60 weighing only 20 lbs less than the Woods unit. That is very impressive. I believe my Howes 60 box is almost 100 lbs lighter.

About the roll over box blade. I recently bought a used Gill 4' roll-over. I had a Standard 4' howse box blade. I don't have a lot of box blade work so maybe I have never had enough practice to get good at using the Howse but I find the Gill roll-over much more useful. It is so simple to roll the blade over and pull it backwards to lever whick I could never do very well with the Howse. Also with the scarifiers rolled down they dig deeper and don't have the interference of the rest of the box blade when you are trying to rip up turf or hard dirt. The Gill is also very nicely made. I think Woods bought Gill so their roll-over is probably pretty much the same.

I would second Pennwalk on the roll over vs standard dox blade. I have a 4' Atlas and have had to make many passes to break through hard pan and level an area whereas a RO with the scarifiers down would have made those jobs a lot quicker. I have looked at the land pride scar bars but they want way too much $$$$ for them and I would have the added time of changing out tools. The more you can do with one tool the happier you'll be.
