I'm fairly new to TBN, but I have enjoyed reading all of the issues that have come up in this thread.:D The humor is great too.:D

I have just recently purchased a small plot of land and I am hoping to learn to grow organic fruits and vegetables when I retire. The government says I have to condition the land for three years... Making sure that all pesticides and such are gone from the soil to claim organic.

Anyway, I have had a barn built and I have bought a tractor. I have already bent the barn door with the FEL. Thank goodness, it is minor, just being stupid and not looking in the right place as I motered into the door.

Anyway I hope to be reading more on Spivys adventures.

I probably won't be able to donate quite as much time as I have over the past six months to giving Spiveyman a hard time, since I have started back to work, but I will try to hold up my end of it, best I can! Might need some help with it, so your welcome to join in.
Does the 3 year rule take into consideration what was happening with the property prior to your purchasing it, or is that a blanket 3 year wait once you purchase the property. Most property for sale doesn't always get used by the previous owner which is why it is being sold. Seems if certification of no pesticides is a requirement, you might get the previous owner to sign off on it, thereby allowing you to decrease your wait time by the amount he didn't use it. If he was farming it, and using pesticides, then you have no choice, but thought it might be worth looking into, as a three year wait is a long time.
Also, can you plant it now, and just not use any pesticides, and just not claim the "pesticide free" for the products your growing, or does the land have to be "crop free"?

Sandman,
I only bought 15 acres of an existing working farm. It was planted in Milo. According to the county extension agent I need to plant some green manure and do some tilling to ensure that the soil loses the chemicals. I was thinking of vetch or a clover of some kind. I still plan on planting some fruit trees and let them be growing. I don't think that they will produce for around three years anyway.

Howdy! Welcome to TBN and to tractoring!! Based on your description of you breaking in your FEL, it sounds like you are in the right place, however being so new I'll give you some pointers. :D

"I have already bent the barn door with the FEL."

Another way to present it:
"One of my first projects will be to replace those old manual doors with some remote control operated automatic doors, so I tested the structure of the existing doors and found that I should be able to use the FEL to remove them very easily given that I could bend them at will."

Next you take some pictures and start a thread then sit back and soak up the advice. I suggest making a few mistakes along that way. This has worked well for me since it gives the pro's here on TBN a place to exhibit their expertise. ;) If you ever need pointers on new mistakes to make, just PM me and I'm sure I can help you along with that.

As for the 3 year waiting period, how close are you to retirement. You said you wanted to do this in retirement right? Sounds like the 3 years shouldn't be a problem given the time it will take to get fruit bearing trees anyway. Good luck with organic. We're just goingin "natural" as organic status was a pain in the rear. :)

Ha!! Recruiting are you? You plan on sharing your FEL with him too?? Sounds like he might be as hard on them as I am! :D

I'm in the middle of Christmas stuff right now, done with my fam, just starting in with my wife's. I'll have some new adventures in the new year though as I plan to get a 3ph post driver and build some fence. Hee Hee Me with a post driver, that should be a hoot. So if you turn the driver side ways, can you shoot those posts across the field like a big nerf dart gun? :D

Thanks for the reply. Yes, I can plant before the three years are up. But it was suggested that I plant the green manure growth to help with conditioning the soil.

But you are correct the organic is a pain. I may end up going natural as you before it is over. I am three years till retirement, which is the reason I am starting now before moving to the property. I have been living in the city so long, I figured I needed to start slow and work my way into it.

I hope everyone had a Merry Christmas and are going to have a Happy New Year.

If he needs to borrow my FEL that is mounted on his tractor, he will have to get in line. Another requirement is his location filled out in his profile, so we will know where to plan him in on the way home with the FEL.

A little help goes a long way!
