I'm sure the HIDs are far superior to the 40 dollar LEDs but I only need to see 200 feet, not 2 miles
I live in the burbs, so I hate to get a over kill light

The tighter the beam the brighter the light will look.
Many of those 1 million, or 30 million candlepower lights really only measure 200,000 to 300,000. Streamlight has the only true "1 million" I have seen in a protable light, but it is pretty big. Streamlight has something called a Waypoint, which from what I have read in reviews, creates a really long distance spot, somwhere north of 100,000 with a LED light source. (Their factory is up the road from where I live).
Regardless of who you buy the light from, make sure the manufacturer rates their product to the ANSI flashlight standards, so you can be sure that what they claim is real and not pulled out of the air like txdon's $10 light.

TDBo I had given up on even looking at lumens or candlelight power. I decided to just start buying and taking back. The Stanley HID is super bright but only last about 20-25 minutes. My first use was the other night waiting for the emergency helicopter. It stayed lit just long enough! When my light was on the others turned theirs off. I will now have to look for a little less light and more burn time for the more than 30 minute situations, but for the price the HID is a blast. Thanks for the Streamlight suggestion.
