In my opinion only...
<font color="blue"> Why only Iraq? </font>
Because N. Korea doesn't have any oil and we stalemated them once already with terrible loss of life. What would we gain by going there again? Nothing but a war with the Chinese and another terrible loss of life. The only possibilities I see in their future are endless rhetoric, capitulation or surgical strikes.
On the other hand, Iraq was a pushover to get out of Kuwait(don't tell that to any families that lost loved ones there) and someone probably thought it would be a pushover again, 10 years later.
Two possibilities come to my mind.
1. We(our government) were made to believe(by their government) that they had WMD and were going to use them on us or our allies. If this is the case they made a terrible blunder, as we called their bluff and didn't wait around for it to happen. In that case, I think we were justified going in there.
2. We(the people of the US) were decieved by our government as to the reasons for going in there. Those reasons being who knows??? Enforcing UN resoultions, capturing lucrative oil holdings, revenge, diversion from problems at home, intimidating other "rogue" nations, etc... who know?
I mean, heck... after 9/11 everybody could see that Afghanistan was going to be the big battleground. The terrorists blatently claimed responsibility, told us they did it, told us where they were and told us they were going to do it again, as soon as they could. That one was completely justified, in my mind.
But Iraq... since we kicked them out of Kuwait, they were still a threat to the region, but seemed to be contained. They didn't appear to be a direct threat to us at the time. They may have supported terrorism, but so did alot of other countries. It seemed we should have let the international community take care of it until it was obvious that they couldn't. But we went in there on the WMD reason, which changed to the humanitarian reason because of the brutal dictator once it was clear we weren't going to find any WMD real soon.
Good grief, can you imagine what will happen if they actually do ever find WMD burried in the dessert? That will bolster the war mentallity and then other threats will more likely be thought of as beatable. Then here comes the draft because no one will volunteer for that one. Scary times we live in.
Thanks for the chance to voice my opinion.
Best wishes to all that have loved ones in harms way in the military.
