Broken Crank

Glad your mechanic caught it this time before the install. Makes you wonder how many others out there. Hopefully you'll have your tractor repaired and back to you soon.

I looked at our cranks last night & they do all have the same marking in the same place. It appears to me that it is either a scuff or maybe a series of small dents in a straight line along the outside of the rod bearing journal. To me it looks more like something caused by a clamp or a mount of some sort that they may have used to hold the crank during manufacturing or during painting, etc. But... it is very small and it could possibly be a casting defect that almost got machine out when the turned it down. This is the first problem we have seen with them though but it is also a fairly new item.

There is only 1 company importing these cranks so they are the same exact cranks that everyone else is selling and I have not heard about any problems from them either. I have contacted the supplier and they are going to check out their stock and see what we can figure out.

I'll keep you posted.

In my experiece a scratch across the face of metal will set up a fracture point. If the scratch is very shallow it probably could be polished out, which will remove the point of a fracure occuring. I learned this about forklift forks. If they are dented across the narrow face they will eventually break there. The fix is to take a die grinder and polish the dent out with the length of the fork.

Aaron , I know you are just guessing as to why the scuff or small dents are there ,but I can't understand why someone would clamp or attatch something (that would scuff or mar) part of a machined rod bearing or crank bearing journal Hopefuly you will get an answer & let us know. Thanks

I retrieved the two cranks last night. Here are the photos of the broken crank, which I bought in August. I hope you are able to see the texture of the inside of the break well enough in the photos.

That looks like a crankshaft out of a 2 cyl, I thought you said it was a YM2010. There have been some problems with the aftermarket 2cyl crankshafts.

The break fracture seems very course to me. My thoughts are improper tempering and case hardening???

The photos are not very clear--It wouls sure help diagnosis if we had some really clear pics. I do not mean to be critical, but it is hard to see the grain structure of the metal in a blurry photo. Your kitchen and dining room are in focus though. ;)

Yes, it is a 2 Cylinder YM2210. I mistyped on the original post.
I will see if I can get some clearer pictures tonight.
