My dealer is notorious for high $ repairs and has left many with a bad after taste. Before I sold the machine to rbargeron I was decided on trailering it to another dealer for repair as 2 others had quoted the job and significantly lower, $3-4K lower which is way more than enough to make me go elsewhere. I told the serive manager everything I have said here and they let me walk out the door without a counter offer or reconsideration. I even pointed out they were quoting a job which may not require splitting the machine, the fact they quoted replacing only 2 sets of parts that combined where only slightly less than a new HST, and the fact they were out of the park absurd in repair cost and low trade in value. I look forward to rbargeron diagnosis as he has the ability and knowledge of a certified Kubota mechanic. My dealer has a HUGE service opertaion, everything from weed wackers to Kubotas to D9 dozers and I bet they make more $ on service than they do selling machines. They even have 2 full time service trucks on the road everyday. By no means is splitting a heavy duty tractor like a L48 a small job, while it is no where near the $ they were talking. I think they were hoping for a homerun, expensive fix and or low trade in with me purchasing a new machine. I did buy a new M7040 with R4s and was delivered yesterday. I shopped around and got them to match the lowest price, interesting where you start negotiations and where you end up. I will be posting pics on the buying thread of the new machine soon.

You probably don't want to name names, but being someone local that uses dealers in southern NH and northern MA it'd be great to know what dealer was pricing so high and which ones you've seen price more fairly. A PM would work too if you don't want to post it openly...

It sounds like you have a defective check and high pressure relief valve. you can check this by swapping the forward and reverse valves which are accessible without dismantling the tractor. If you lose foreward and reverse works, that is your problem. Also your pressure test ports are accessible without dissassembly, which should be done before anything

This swap has already been performed as discussed earlier in the thread.

If the new transmission installation is cheaper, that's the way I would go since you should see another 2000 or more hours with it.
You wrote
That would make any repairs tax deductable, which doesn't help your cashflow, but will be some relief when you file your taxes next year...

only if he uses it for income producing activities...

I would definitely think pressure readings would be in order before any significant teardown.
Seems the OP who sold the machine in it's needing repair state was getting hosed by the original dealer quote, where they were hoping for a possible trade and profit on both resale of trade and on new sale. All of which, if true is a bad way to treat a long time loyal customer- regardless of brand of tractor.
I was going to suggest the possibility of a trade with another dealer who might have treated him right, but came to the game too late and the tractor had already found it's new home.
Sounds like overall things are working out for all.
Sorry to hear the OP got jerked around by the dealer- but sometimes things happen a certain way for a reason that becomes clear later on.

Indeed, that should be one of the first steps. These CUTs run HST pressures of 4-6K psi, so
a 10,000 psi guage is necessary. I have one to perform just these tests, tho I have yet to
use it.

Anyone know what the L48 HST pressure is?

high pressure relief --- full throttle, brakes locked, 48 - 5,100 psi. charge oil pressure -- 340 - 370 psi. Terry

........Anyone know what the L48 HST pressure is?...

Dave:
The WSM says charge pump relief valve operating pressure is 342 to 370 psi. The combination check/high pressure relief valves have an operating pressure of 4836 to5124 psi.

Terryz:
Where did the full-throttle-brakes-locked test come from? Is it something Kubota endorses? How much warmup? Does it matter whether the throttle is opened first or the travel pedal is down first? How much time do you let it whistle over the relief?

EDIT - just noticed the tests p.3S6-3S9 - says 10 sec - Dooh!!

Full throttle, brakes locked, oil at operating temp is typical procedure and not just Kubota. You don't need to hold it over relief long, it is either going to make the pressure or not. It is even possible that it will over power the brakes, in which case you'll want to block the tires. Oh, and open the throttle all the way first and ease into the HST pedal.
