I have a Mitsubishi MTE 2000D. Everything was fine until today while mowing a field I hit a 50 pound rock that wasn't there last year. Someone put it there to mark something I guess. I was swinging a 60" brush hog and broke the rock into three pieces. I stopped and picked up the pieces and started mowing again. Then 20 feet later there was a breaking metallic sound and the mower stopped rotating. Looking down I saw oil coming out from the bottom of the pto shaft where it exits the transmission. The output shaft is all floppy. I managed to get the mower off and the tractor back in the barn. I am wondering if anyone knows what my next step should be and what may have broken. I am guessing I will have to go into the transmission. There are 4 large bolts on the plate that is around the shaft where it exits the transmission. Could it maybe be as simple as removing the plate would allow access for repair? Any and all suggestions are welcome. I am a fair mechanic, enough to know to not just start ripping and tearing into it without knowing where I am going with it. Help?

I do not know Mitsubishis but I certainly would not hesitate to pull the four bolts and see what I could see You would know a lot more than what you do now and the tractor is down anyway.

This is a different tractor, but it might give you an idea ....

my tractor has a spring pin / clip pin you just remove and the PTO comes out. It's used to flip the pto to 1000 or 540...don't know if your tractor has that but it's pretty simple

It appears that the PTO shaft may have broken, you won't know until you take a look. You didn't say whether the mower had a slip clutch or shear pin, either should have given way before the shaft. Keep us posted.

Welcome to TBN, there are many great and knowledgeable people here ready to lend a hand.

Thank you for the suggestions.

They were helpful, but the 4 bolts only secured a sheet metal plate. The case behind it is solid.

I think I will need to open the lid on the transmission to get at the pto shaft. I also cannot find a way to remove the over running clutch, no shear pin or bolt, or really any sign of a way to remove it. This one came with the tractor, my last Mitzu I installe a or clutch and as I recall it had a drift pin that held it on and acted as a shear pin. Nothing like that on this one. Is it maybe factory installed?

Is there a pin under those grease zerks?

There is a lot on top of the lid. I am hoping I can leave all this together and just take it all off in one piece. It looks like a drain plug on this side and then just a series of bolts holding the top to the bottom?

Yes, and I got the drift pin out far enough to remove the over-running clutch. And the pto shaft seems intact. I can move it in and out, and when I move it out I can engage the gears. But it is obviously missing some kind of retainer inside the case. The oil seal actually looks ok, it was losing oil because the shaft slid in to the splines.
So it looks like I do need to take off the cover with the pump assembly off of the lower case. The problem is the two parts are sealed together with a sealer that will not budge. I can't even get a razor blade into it.

So here is an update. I pulled the top case off and found that the pto shaft had popped backward so the bearings were out of their housings. I was able to use a wooden drift to pound the shaft and bearings back into place. Nothing was broken. I am guessing the shock of hitting the stone popped it out? Here are photos. First shows the shaft out of place, then going back in, then all the way in and the shaft back against the seal. I just need to put it all back together now.IMG_20200626_172000.jpgIMG_20200626_172032.jpgIMG_20200626_173333.jpgIMG_20200626_173345.jpg

No signs of a groove for a snap ring anywhere? That's kinda odd that they just put the PTO shaft like that without something to prevent it for sliding in.

My thoughts exactly. I’d be referring to a service manual and fish around in the sump for any loose parts before closing it up!

I didn't see any groves for a snap ring. Must simply be a friction fit Nice job on getting after it. Good luck on the re-assembly. Let us know how everything functions.

With a helical gear like that there are forces trying to slide the shaft along it's axis. So there's usually some provision to keep the shaft from moving back and forth.
Maybe it was on the outside and was removed to fit the overrun clutch?

Based on the sealant on the cover I'd say this has happened to this machine previously. Probably a designed in "feature" and not a "bug" as we like to call them in the computer business. You know the ones where the media says "It was a computer glitch".
