There is a lot on top of the lid. I am hoping I can leave all this together and just take it all off in one piece. It looks like a drain plug on this side and then just a series of bolts holding the top to the bottom?

Is there a pin under those grease zerks?

Yes, and I got the drift pin out far enough to remove the over-running clutch. And the pto shaft seems intact. I can move it in and out, and when I move it out I can engage the gears. But it is obviously missing some kind of retainer inside the case.The oil seal actually looks ok, it was losing oil because the shaft slid in to the splines.
So it looks like I do need to take off the cover with the pump assembly off of the lower case. The problem is the two parts are sealed together with a sealer that will not budge. I can't even get a razor blade into it.

So here is an update. I pulled the top case off and found that the pto shaft had popped backward so the bearings were out of their housings. I was able to use a wooden drift to pound the shaft and bearings back into place. Nothing was broken. I am guessing the shock of hitting the stone popped it out? Here are photos. First shows the shaft out of place, then going back in, then all the way in and the shaft back against the seal. No signs of a groove for a snap ring anywhere? That's kinda odd that they just put the PTO shaft like that without something to prevent it for sliding in.

My thoughts exactly. I’d be referring to a service manual and fish around in the sump for any loose parts before closing it up!

I didn't see any groves for a snap ring. Must simply be a friction fit Nice job on getting after it. Good luck on the re-assembly. Let us know how everything functions.

With a helical gear like that there are forces trying to slide the shaft along it's axis. So there's usually some provision to keep the shaft from moving back and forth.
Maybe it was on the outside and was removed to fit the overrun clutch?

Based on the sealant on the cover I'd say this has happened to this machine previously. Probably a designed in "feature" and not a "bug" as we like to call them in the computer business. You know the ones where the media says "It was a computer glitch".
