Looking for advice on favorite and effective brush killers.
Brand names or home brew, what have fellow members used to effectively discourage the enrichment of hauthorn, wild rose and other nusence brush in fence rows?
Any and all suggestions appreciated.

I use Garlon 4 (the generic version from Alligare). Works well for wild rose and other saplings. Supposedly it works on wisteria - we'll see. I applied it recently, and I am not sure it's doing anything.

There may be better, but I just use Round-up. Does the job for me, which is nothing more than killing the vegetation in the ditch. I've tried the off brands, but didn't find them to be as effective.

I hit the weeds in the ditch this afternoon actually, then rained this evening, lol. Just my luck.

goto your local agricultural / chemical place. you might be able to get some higher quality chemicals than the diluted stuff sold on store shelves.

diesel, seen it used for many years. not sure if diluted or not, it can cause other issues.

Gordon's Brush killer (with 2-4D) is sold at Tractor supply....... in states where it is legal.
I find Gordon's to be much more effective than Ortho Brush-B-Gon or Roundup.
Roundup is actually a weed killer, not a brush killer.

For situations like this I like to spray a mixture of glyphosate (roundup but I usually use a generic) and 2-4d.

My neighbor works for the local EMC and has once or twice "loaned" me some of the stuff they use to "clear" under powerlines. Unmarked jugs. I sure wish I knew what it was so I could buy more! Total burn-down of absolutely everything in no more than a few days. And nothing grows back for a year or more.

No personal experience but this stuff claims to be a year long brush killer. Gordon's Barrier Year-Long Vegetation Killer Concentrate, 1 gal. - For Life Out Here

I just tried this for the first time this year and went with the higher level mixture on their label. It took forever for it to show any signs of working. I think it was more then two weeks before stuff started turning brown. Eventually it did kill everything I spray, but now, a month later, weeds are growing back.

I rate it no better then any generic round up, just a lot slower and more expensive.

I have never used Gordon's "weed killer"!
I use Gordon's BRUSH KILLER, and for brush only!
Gordon's weed killer & brush killer are different chemical formulations.
The Gordon's brush killer works great,(for killing brush) and mixing it with diesel instead of water, seems to work even better.
(You did not hear that from me!)

Thanks for the input on this product! I will take it off my want list when I get ready to spray my fence line.

Very interesting opposite results using the Gordon's product. As of today, I haven't shopped for the product due to other seasonal chores but wondering if a dash of diesel fuel added to the sprayer mix would ramp up the effectness of the product by providing a bit more staying power on the unwanted vegetation.
I would rather not go the chemical route but dancing with a mechanical brush cutter along several hundred feet of fence row is not exactly my idea of romance either.

I've been using Triclopyr (Garlon 4 is a common trade name) for poison oak. Triclopyr is specific to broadleaf plants, is not too toxic to people and critters and does not last too long in the soil. I first tried some retail package stuff but it was not all that effective. I found some papers from the UC extension on poison oak removal and they recommend a 2-5% solution of Triclopyr applied to the leaves. The retail package stuff was 8%, so with their label recommended few ounces/gallon the concentration's way too low. I bought a gallon of 62% Triclopyr and some surfactant (and a 4 gallon backpack sprayer- we have a TON of poison oak). I've tried spraying at 1% triclopyr and 2%. Both work but with 1% you need to get all the leaves. If you miss some the plant will live even while most of the leaves die, and it will form new leaves. 2% is better at killing the plant. Either way it takes a while, that's the nature of Triclopyr. It'd be great if there was a smoking hole half an hour after application but since nothing works very well on poison oak I'll take dead and crispy in a month.

The UC documents also recommend basal application of a 20% solution in oil (diesel or vegetable). You spray 18" of the stem. I'm going to try that on some of it, where I can get to the stems.

All herbicides have seasons and applications where they work better or worse depending on what you're spraying. It's worth while doing the research so you're getting the most effect for your expense and effort. It only took me a few minutes to find what I was looking for.
