I have a jubilee so only around 30 hp. I picked the hog up used about three months ago when my other one had the stump jumper damaged. It sounds like the gears might be toast. Is it worth trying to repair? I might try to see if the other gear box I have will mount up on it.

Many of the "economy" mowers use what is best described as a "generic" gear box. Many will interchange from mower to mower. You may get lucky and be able to swap from one mower to the other. Take a close look at them. If the gear box is simular, MAYBE there's a chance gear sets will interchange too.

If the pictures are of it during it's present condition, the gearbox is out of it. The bolt isn't sheared obviously by the dust around the yoke and shaft. Bummer...:(

I had a similar situation and it was the splines where the stumpjumper/blade assembly attatched to the underside of mower. The shaft on gearbox was made out of tougher metal than splined section on blade assembly. Bought a new splined assembly from a place in Corsicana, Tx, welded it in place and I was back in business.

Good point!!! That would definitely be worth looking at!!! There might be hope after all. :D

Look at the nut on the stump jumper if the pin has came out and the nut has gotten lose .and the stump jumper has dropped some on a taper shaft it won't work . just run the nut back down and put a pin in it.

my stump jumper has a bolt in the very center pulling it up onto the spline shaft. when it comes loose It acts the same way.

Here are some pics of the setup...

If the damage is not in the gearbox.. and the shaft is turning ( bolt not sheared ).. then i'd check the hub onthe blade carrier.. it may be splined, and the splines sheared.. or the nut backet off and is letting the hub fall out of the splines. ( I've seen that before... sometimes it makes a big bladed frisbee that can shoot hundreds of feet and cut down sapling trees yards from your tractor... )

coupla things to check:

there is a lot of oil around the gearbox...check for internal failure/leakage of fluid

where the blade carrier bolts on to the shaft it may have splines that are worn smooth if the carier bolt got loose and the bladestarted to slip.

I use a grade 5 bolt for the shaft. I had the weld break under the bush hog where the spline shaft is welded to the stump jumper. The whole thing with the blades and stump jumper fell to the ground. This was on a King Kutter mower. It was an easy fix to weld back. No problems all year.
