No poison Ivy here. We have poison Oak and I'm very allergic. I've kept it in check with Roundup. No burning, no Hogging, etc - just hit it with Roundup and let it be.

You guys would cringe if you saw what I ripped out with the PTB and my BX, some of the vines growing up a willow bigger than your wrist, boat loads of smaller vines off the walls, nasty!

I have been successful in my war by attacking with generic glyphosate. After a week or so, it is dead and dry, and I bush hog without concern. But I do follow up by bush hogging a field to sort of "wipe off" any residue from the tractor/bush hog, just in case.

I have some in a pine woods that I can't get the tractor into, so I sprayed from the edge as far as the sprayer and hose would reach. Once that area was dead and dried, I walked beyond it with a backpack sprayer and sprayed another strip as far as the spray could reach. I'm careful not to spray anything that is not poison ivy. A few more rounds of that, and I hope to have most of it under control, until the birds plant me another crop :).

... just wear long clothing and wash everything after.

This is my method. Doesn't matter how warm the day, minimizing exposed skin is your best bet. After mowing a couple of times, it will be gone. Glyphosate works well too, but in larger he patches, you must walk thru the patch to wet all of the leaves - exposing your clothing to more of the irritant.

Just do it on a good rainy day!! Make sure the plants do not carry seeds. But please everyone... do not spray! Mother earth will thank you for it.:cool2: Poison ivy will thrive on "disturbed" ground. After repeated cuts, other native plants will take over. Just keep your mowing to date, and eventually you will see nature transformed to a more pleasurable way.

I have some areas that I have to weedeat. Long sleeves, goggles, and a mask. If you can get a lawnmower into the tight places, it'll keep it under control. I cut a one foot section out of the big ones that climb up the side of pine trees. Then I have to pull the bottom piece out with a brush grubber. Jewelweed soap and spray work wonders. I use it a lot in the summer.

My 2 cents,

I try to attack the ivy at the root level. First I spray as much as I can with Roundup and that will knock back a whole lot of the plant. Unfortunately, you may not get rid of every single living piece of the plant, so I follow up by using a rake to pull up the weeds. Cover yourself from head to toe and use cheap leather gloves that you can dispose after using. I once pulled up over 200 feet of roots that were invading my lawn prior to planting grass seed. I obviously did not want a yard full of poison ivy. There were still a couple of small patches that I did not completely eradicate by pulling, but without the support of a huge root network, the remaining portions were easily killed off with Roundup. Typically, there will be a sort of central root somewhere in the mess. If you can isolate that portion, do so and then be relentless with the Roundup. Eventually it will completely die off. Going after Poison Ivy is not a singular battle but rather a drawn out campaign, but if you keep at it--round up and pulling roots, you will eventually win. Always cover yourself as much as possible, wash clothes afterward and shower as soon as possible. The times I have had Poison Ivy I have had to get prednisone (sp) prescriptions. That prescription will wipe out your poison ivy reaction in a couple of days and then you (or rather I was) will be more or less immune to Poison Ivy for the duration of the prescription.

If you can not pull, Round up first, wait a day or so and then mow. The herbicide should have spread to the rest of the root system by that point. You may, however, still need follow up Roundup treatments.

Best of luck to you and kill that Ivy beast!

Definitely don't do it during a dry non-growing period. Oils get carried by the dust & will land anywhere/everywhere (even worse if you are sweaty!). Even in moist, growing periods, watch out for breezy days that can carry cut particles. The plus side of mowing is that ivy apparently doesn't like "over grazing". Used to have it growing in some open field areas until we re-started regular (i.e. monthly or so) mowing there. It finally gave up after a couple of seasons.

Saltwater brine kills poison ivy and is not a toxin like round up, which is just another form of agent orange/dioxin.
I know this is everyone's favorite herbicide and Monsanto's number 1 seller- but it is unhealthy. (click 301 below)

Why? Evidence points to glyphosate toxicity from the overuse of Monsanto’s Roundup herbicide on our food.

Been battling this at my property. Mowing regularly has checked it some, but it is still there. I get it almost every single time I bush hog. My best luck is long pants over boots, a hat, long sleeve light jacket with gloves over cuffs and collar up and hold my breath every time wind switches. This clothing is a hot option. Take an immediate shower when done and put clothes in the wash. I think only 2 or 3 times I have not got it so far. I have to get shots of cortisone when I get it.

I may actually prep this property to build soon. I will probably spray the area ~1 acre where it grows more than I can get under control. I have used poison ivy round up and applied directly to some of it, but it is too dense for me to get all. I have cut a foot or more of root off every tree that it goes up in this area, some of these main roots are 4" or more and applied round up to the fresh cut section. Unfortunately it keeps coming back. I have less than I did have though, so may be moving in the right direction.

I believe if I could hog or mow more than 3 times a year, it would get better. It's just frustrating that I'm so allergic.
