What causes interior latex ceiling paint to bubble?

What is the way to fix this issue?

Have you been up in the attic (if possible) to look at it from the top side?

Latex paint will bubble if put over old oil base paint. Do you know what you have existing? If not, always Kilz before new paint.

No idea what the old paint was since it was done by the previous owner.

Kilz was recommended to me by a friend too thanks.

I sanded the area which is near where the light/ceiling fans was, with a orbital sander until I got the paint to feather out.

Then I cleaned the area with simple green and covered the area with joint compound last night and will sand it and prime it with Kilz tonight and may re-prime the whole ceiling.

What is under the bubbling paint? If it is another layer of paint, that is an adhesion problem. If it is the surface of the ceiling material (drywall or plaster), that is a moisture problem.

Took me 40 years to learn, prime everything! I’m building a new house so, PVA over green sheetrock and I’m gonna shoot primer over that! I know, overkill but, cheap labor!

Primer is good. I’m told Kilz is best so that’s what I use.

Someone suggested I change the settings on my I pad to stop the hieroglyphs. Lost the post but I’m going to try anyway.

A moisture problem with paint is not always from a leak. It can be because the humidity is higher on one side than the other. The moisture will move to the drier side, pushing off the paint in the process.

I did not know that.

The ceiling is open to the attic.

Would it be worth it to warm the top side like with a hair dryer as its a small area?

Just check that there is the same amount of insulation over that area as the rest of the attic. You stated that there was a light fixture in that area. Has the ceiling box been removed & the hole sealed up?

The light box is still there not sure on the insulation level as I have been moving it around to work on things in the attic like run a new wire to that box.

Go to Sherwin Williams. Their products are top notch. They also have a sandable, knockdown primer that will give you great results.

Another cause can be that warm moist air is escaping from the room & then condensating around the opening in the attic during cool weather. Seal around the box & any openings inside the box.

I have been painting homes for over 40 yrs and all the things mentioned can be causes but most likely it is from heat from the ceiling light fixture.I literally have scraped and patched around hundreds of lights over the yrs. if attic insulation is sparse that also creates more heat reaching the drywall. if it were a water problemthere would be brown stains.

I might have heat issues from the light, but it’s a LED bulb so I don’t think so.
