Bucket Bumper...no more dents

I extended the top edge of my bucket by 12" with 1/4" checker plate mainly because with a full bucket of pit run and up all the way caused a 3" rock to fall on my hood.

Ouch, Oh I would hate that, yes extending the top edge is good protection against that happing. But I certainly would not be worried about bending the top factory bucket edge. To bend that edge is "bucket abuse"

I'm pissed I'm wearing out my bucket edge plowing the snow in my driveway with my new tractor.

WaxMan, could you weld some 1/4", 3/8", or 1/2" thick strips of metal on each CORNER of your bucket, bottom side of course, to act as a sacrificial piece to protect the edge when plowing? It would only have to be maybe 1 1/2" or 2" wide. You would not be able to scrap completely down to the blacktop with these strips added but it would only leave a very small amount of snow on the driveway.

I did this to my Meyer snow plow when I had it on my truck. Welded a 3/4" thick piece on the front of the plow edge and it took the brunt of the abuse and my plow edge lasted forever. Just a thought. Stanley

My tractor came with a decent size dent in the top folded edge of the bucket.

Removed the dent and wanted to keep the bucket from getting dented again.

I need to move some good size stones this spring, so came up with this bumper
to help protect the top edge when the stones tilt back.

Will find out if this works soon. If so, I will drill holes in the front edge and bolt it
directly and securely to the bucket. For now, it is fastened temporarily, as shown.

The good news is that this bumper will also help out when doing loader work. When the loaded
bucket rises, the bumper will help stop stones from rolling out of the bucket and landing on the hood.

If it works it works !

I think the extension things you add to the top are normally called a spill guard.

WaxMan, here is a picture of the added pieces of steel to my Meyer plow in each corner. You need to look closely to see them. Like I said in my previous post yours would go on the bottom at each corner and wouldn't need to be as large.

Wear edges AND a channel drain in the garage...That's a thinkin' man right there.

I see what you mean, I'll take a picture of what mine looks like and post it later.
You got me thinking though, what about a "one bolt" on disposable skid plate on each corner. Just a three inch disk with one bolt up though.

But on second thought it will probably leave gouges in the pavement, same with welding just on the edges. I think it would have to go across the full bottom.

The rest of your bucket looks like it's in really good shape, How do you think the former owner bent the top? Maybe the hook? or a rock? It may help with stones rolling out of the bucket. I shake the curled bucket below hood height before lifting overhead or transporting. Just to settle the load and let whatever is going to fall out, fall out. I don't care too much about the bucket, but the Hood, I can't have a dent in my hood, BAM what a feeling that must be whatching a giant rock land on your hood. Then looking at the dent forever. Talk about being disgusted...

It depends on the bucket. Here is what his bucket top looked like beforehand:
Like this one on my Kubota B7510HST with the LA302 FEL (4-ft bucket)

Not a while lot to the top of the bucket. Our B7500 has the same type and we are planning to weld on a piece of angle to strengthen it when we add hooks.

Yeah, that's the same lip as was on my B3030. (Thin) When I welded hooks, I put the two end ones on the top lip at the very end, flush with the side of the bucket so the sides of the bucket was the support. The middle one I welded a 1 inch square 1/8 tubing between the lip under the hook and the bucket top.

In any case to bent the top you either have to be pulling or using it to push a tree over or something to bent it. (something you shouldn't be using it for)

On my B3030 the fel wasn't strong enough to bend it by using fel power. If you use your head about use, you shouldn't have to worry about bending it.
If your all gun hoe and ramming stuff or pulling/pushing stuff then reinforce it.
Now when you get into the heavy duty buckets they are reinforced because the tractor and the FEL is more powerful.
Or I could just be full of it, I don't know, there are probably a dozen ways to bend a bucket in normal fel use.
