I guess a lot of how deep i would dig would depend on the soil. Not to many places up here in the mountains that you can't hit something solid after digging 3 or 4 ft. If i was building somewhere the soil was soft like sand or something, i guess i would make the footprint of the footer larger to spread out the weight to keep the bridge from sinking. Sinking would be my largest worry if i could not hit something solid. other than water getting under it from the soft soil being eroded away.
