Gizmo,

Sounds like you put up a good fence. 22 years is a long time. You have pictures of your fence?

We're finally getting around to replacing all of our fencing. The youngest is 20 years old and the oldest is 25. The biggest problem our posts have, fire ants. Darn things will eat the bottom out of post faster than any team of termites!

Hmmmm.... not sure which is worse. Fire ants suck, but then again, so does cold weather (at least to a southern boy). :D

Consider something like ramm fence. I am fencing in 3 acres with Ramm Fence...using a 5.25 inch top rail (3 wires in plastic, and then 4 lines of coated wire.

Nice thing about a product like Ramm fence is that you do not need to space your posts at an exact interval...whihc helps out when you are fightig hidden rocks.

Thanks guys this has been some great advice. I did look at the rammfence but it was just to expensive for me. I have been looking for sawmills in the Clover SC area but have yet to find one. There is a Carter Lumber down the road so I figure I will check with them on the 1x6x16 rails HomeDepot has them for $3.97 but that is only for 8ft. I wanted to do the 16ft lengths for the strength of the board crossing a post without a seam.

Thanks for the advice on the galvanized nails vice the screws.

I still have 6 holes that are like drilling into concrete! I finally filled the holes with water and am going to let them sit for a day or so. I took yje bit off of the auger and sharpened it and that helped some but it is still getting real hot in the clay. The other 22 holes drilled fine.

Thanks
Wade

Tractor Supply used to have some full 1 x 6's that were priced good. However, I think they were 14 footers. The HD or Lowes 1 x 6 deck boards are a waste of money on a fence.

I just bought some 1x6x16' oak boards at my local Southern States Coop for $7.75. Your local Farmer supply may have oak boards. You will have to trim them all as they run a couple of inches long.

Horses are much happier and better behaved with company. Horse buddy, goat.... They also like to rub and scratch their butts on fences.
If you want to keep horses off of a fence, it needs to be electrified. You can add rope or ribbon (My personal preference) to the top board.
