Building a switchback in a road

See if they show up

Looks good. That kind of grade to the side keeps the water draining off without creating ruts. However, it makes me nervous about sliding off the trail when it's muddy:eek: especially if I have the tractor. I've been redoing my trails to make them more level and secure when it's muddy.

That was only one pass over it, roughing in. I will finish it flatter. Just gotta get this switch back done, then I can start getting something I can use whenever. I won't take my tractor on this right now.

Thanks for the replies. It amazes me what you can do with a little tractor. I like the idea of digging Dow as opposed to building it up. Our soil here is clay and settles forever if you don't compact it as you put it down. While possible it would be a lot harder on this particular part of the road than just cutting deeper into the hill. Attached is my machine. I don't think I could do this without it.

Excuse my ignorance, but exactly what is that attachment on your skid steer ? Fecon Brush cutter ?
That rig sure looks like it could do some damage to some brush. How big of a diameter sapling do you take down with that rig ?

It is a CID brush cutter. It's a 3 bladed rotary cutter. It is rated at 5 inch trees, but hardwood is tougher and trees like cedar bust apart so I can cut bigger than 5 inch cedar. It does a good job. I hire it out for alot of pond dams and off camber stuff also locust groves and wet areas. We love the machine.

Here is a real Fecon type mulcher

It was parked down the road when they were doing power line clearing. There are also smaller versions which will go on a Bobcat.

I just saw a smaller one on a skid steer doing a right of way but did not know what it was.

Thanks
Bill

A tracked skid steer and a forestry mulcher like that cost about $150K new :( I have no idea what one like I pictured above would cost. Check youtube for videos, they are quite impressive :)

Thanks so much for the information - I just love tracked equipment. A friend of mine has a Vermeer SC 60TX stump grinder. It even has a remote - we stood under my shed during a rain storm and that thing waded through ankle deep water and did a job without messing up my yard. Since then I am sold on track machines - love to watch them work.beforestump1.jpg

We looked into a head for our machine but we are standard flow. I would have had to buy another 40k skid steer to run the 50k used head. We were quickly out of my price range.

But I do love our machine.
