BUILDING PERMITS!

Same thing happened to me...I was clearing out a spot to build on and a township inspector stopped by "just to see what I was up to"... I was in the process of getting my permit at the time of his "visit" /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif /w3tcompact/icons/clever.gif

>>That is what the house is assessed at. You looking to move to TAX LAND I mean New Jersey???

No thanks...things are bad enough here in Taxachusetts...for a while I was considering a move to Maine until it changed its slogan from "Vacationland" to "Taxationland"...sounds like the guy in Utah has the best deal..

Yep, have been here since 1987 and love it , strangers ask how are you in stores and really what to know. The taxes are so high because we have very little industry, mostly farms. The town is 18 sq. miles and has about 5,000 people. I know the guys out west would call that a big city, but in New Jersey its Paradise! In our town the minimum lot size is 2-5 acres, so 10 houses to an acre is not something we have to look at here. Still some nearby towns have this and have all the headaches that go with it. One town not far from here had a 73% increase in taxes in ONE YEAR, the town folks went nuts, city council listen and brought it down to 70%!!

Mark

I in live south Jersey keep in mind that not only do I need a permit (property tax increase form) from the local gov't I also need a permit from the GREAT and POWERFUL Pinelands. They can make you take it down and start over again.

I knew i knew where you lived Makes Mark! All kinds of goodies in that silo. Me and my buddies used to sneak into that silo ages ago and the spring house (25 or 30 years ago i guess it must've been!)... yesiree bob, the good old days.

InspectorMan,
I don't know if you're kidding or not. We run into people all the time who had some kind of experience on our farm, including my building inspector, who said he used to farm the fields surrounding our place. Maybe he has a "special place in his heart" for this place. Wishful thinking.

Re: BUILDING PERMITS!/TAXES

As far as taxes, It's hard to beat it here. We moved from a Chicago suburb 6 years ago, where our taxes on a 50 yr. old, 1400 SF house w/ 6000SF lot were ~$4k/yr.

That was with substantial commercial tax payers (Car lots, Shopping mall, various other businesses.

When we moved out here and were looking for a place, the realtor told us what the taxes were and we almost had a heart failure!!

It certainly makes it easier. Our town is about 20,000 people. We're ~8 miles from town on 40 acres, surrounded by mostly ranchers and hay farmers who tease us about our little place.

It's about 45 minutes from water skiing or snow skiing, depending on which way you go. Only a couple hours from Vegas if the urge hits.

We're on well & septic, part of why the taxes are so low.

Makers_Mark, no really, i'm serious! I've been there many times when I was younger. I grew up in Stillwater, not far from you. My folks had a little house just off the center of town which they sold. But yes, one of childhood friends used to know the owner of your property, i think they were horse people. We knew many of the people in that area. My parents used to deal in dried fruit and nuts (no joke). They knew practically everyone in Sussex County back then. But yes we spent many times in that silo and the spring house, it was a common place for boys to take their girls back then. If my memory doesn't fail me there used to be a gorgeous root cellar there too, right down from the spring house.

InspectorMan...

HOLY CR*P! I can't believe it. You really do know where it is. Yes I have heard that's where boys took their girls. We still stay in contact with the original owners. Great people. I'm in shock. It's truly a small world. Here's my email - shadowfarm@yahoo.com - I would love to hear stories about the place. Unfortunately the wood portion of the spring house finally came down this winter. We plan on restoring or preserving the stone portion. I really can't believe it.

Wow! Look at that spring house. You should get yourself one of those dandy cuban framers...they'll whip that building right back to shape and feed you empandas too!

Re: BUILDING PERMITS!/TAXES

Right around us most other parcels run from ~80 - 640 acres. Around this valley they run the gamut from 1/2 to 1 to 5 to 20, and numerous big chunks.
