Hi everyone! New member with a question of course.
Got a new to me 3616 Mahindra and need a bush hog, rotary cutter, whatever you want to call it. A friend of mine has 2 for grass/hay cutting and 2 for brush cutting. He is willing to sell me one of the brush cutting ones... a 5 foot one he beefed up with angle iron and thicker plating and new seals in 60HP gearbox. Problem is it has no driveline. Would you get a slip clutch driveline or just the shear bolt type? I suppose one could get the slip clutch and use a shear bolt in the mount as well....I am going to be clearing old cutover area max 3-4" stuff. Not really concerned about replacing shear bolts often or damaging cutter since I am getting it so cheap and am in no hurry. Just want to make sure I don't do damage to PTO in tractor....

Hi. Welcome.

If protecting the PTO is primary go with shear and slip. Never hurts to have both.
Good luck with it.

"max 3-4" stuff"
"60HP gearbox"

An actual Bush Hog brand cutter that can handle 4 inch material has a 210 HP gear box.
But yeah, I'd go both, shear bolt and slip clutch. Clutch will slip if just overloaded, ie cutting to much too fast. Clutch slips, you slow down, clutch locks back up and you keep on going. A shear bolt will protect from the shock load ie hitting a 4 inch stump, cutter stops abruptly, you get off tractor, clean out pants, replace shear bolt, keep on going.
Good luck.

Four inch stuff is pretty big , be careful and make sure no one is around that cutter . I would want all the protection I could have for my tractor cutting 3 and 4 inch stuff. I am not sure I would even attempt to do that with my 5700 .

Good Luck and be careful
