Quite simply, it fired out of battery. If maintenance was not the cause, it is the ammo's fault. Why ATK/Federal hasn't been notified is a mystery.
Explain how. Please.

Did i understand this correctly. A round went off in chamber. Causing the bolt 'explode' to Which caused a round in the mag to go off? How is that possible? Would/ could the schrapnal from the bolt rupture the case, exploding the powder pushing out the bullet and primer?
I have an understanding of how an ar works but im lost here...

Was your friend using Lake city Federal factory loads, or Maine CCo reloads w/ Lake City brass??
The only way I know of that a AR can fire out of battery is to slam fire due to something on the bolt face like a broken firing pin, chunk of carbon, ect. In that case the rifle would have doubled. By design, even if the hammer drops when out of battery, the firing pin will not hit the primer.
There's no doubling here. The bolt is fully forward and bound in place by all the warped metal, another reason I doubt it fired out of battery for any reason. If he decides to get out the one handled ballpeen adjustment tool and attempt to split the upper and lower, I'll get more pictures of the bolt face and last shell fired.
Has he, or is he going to contact Federal? He should do so before doing a post mortem. They may want the gun. Besides the front sight, the rest is just about distroyed anyway.
