Hi everyone,

I got a BX 1500 right now. I am looking into getting the remote hydraulics for it. Local Dealer can get me everything including the control valve, all the lines, and everything needed for $540. Now, I am looking at another local dealer for a Woods BH6000 BH. The specs on this BH says it will handle a 14-30 HP tractor. The BX 1500 just barely passes that...

Anyone have one on this tractor? Would it have enough power to really run this backhoe? Any thoughts?

Thanks

What do you intend to do with the backhoe?

Enough HP or not, the BX1500 is rather light. You'll need some weight to do serious digging. Seems like the hoe would push the tractor around more than it would dig....if the hoe has any power.

Several here have said that a small hoe on a small tractor won't dig any faster than a man with a shovel. It will save callouses and sweat, however.

Well, I wont be digging anything really tough. Most of the soil is sandy, and some spots loamy. I bet your right how it might push the tractor around. I've operated a BX 24 with a hoe and it did sometimes even on that. All depends on how you dig too I suppose.

There are 2 or 3 real good threads about BHs on the BX1500 .
Do a search and do some good reading about it.
Weight wise the BX1500 is about the same weight as a BX23 so i see no problem for a BX1500 to hoadle the BH.
I should know as I have 2 BX1500s and a BX23.

For the people that have added a BH, did you have to add the pump to the PTO on the back or did you tap into the existiing hydraulics?

/ BX 1500 w/BH? #10
You tap into the existing hydraulics at a distribution block located behind the left rear wheel. I added a Wood's BH6000 to my BX2200 and love it. I have pulled up rocks so large that the front end loader couldn't lift them. I did the installation myself in about 7 1/2 hrs. The installation manual was very good also.

Not to jump on you or cause offense or anything but...
I would be willing to bet that those that said it never tried to keep up with one.
They are by no means as fast as a full size TLB but I will race anyone that wants to pick up a shovel.

The BX1500 has plenty of power to run the BH6000 and while it is lighter, a couple hundred pounds isn't making that big of a difference. If it bothers you, add a scoop of soil to the FEL of the BX1500 and it is about the same weight as my BX2230. The curl on my backhoe can easily pull the rig backward even with all the tires off the ground. It is a matter of finesse to use the BH properly on these lighter machines.

To this specific comment, I totally disagree. I planted a tree in hardpan a couple of years ago. For giggles, I broke out the shovel and with all my weight, I could dig the tip in MAYBE 1/2". I hit it with the digging bar a couple of times and chiseled away a handful of dirt in 5 minutes. My backhoe couldn't do much more than dig the teeth in, but after 15 minutes of scratching and scooping, I had a 10 gallon hole dug. Small backhoe or not, I know which I'd rather...

I've never heard this comment passed and I can absolutely, positively, without any doubt in my mind, tell you that the smallest of small backhoes, the BH6000, can dig MUCH faster than I ever could. Ever. On my best of days with 2 Red Bulls.

That would have to be a mighty big guy with a mighty big shovel. They could have used his help on the Panama Canal.

I can attest to the hardpan issue . When i was diggin a footing for my garage pole barn style, the local zoning says i need ot dig to 40" deep. I hit hardpan at 38" in one area. ARGH!! the backhoe would scrape a thousandth at a time, I could see hardpan being pulverized into fine powder smoke with each scrape. Since it was getting late that evening, i gave up for the day. We had rain overnight and that helped with the digging the next day. (got it done with no prob) I dont think a man can ever beat the backhoe digging from the BX's with woods or kubota BH. It's all on how you do the digging with the BH like others mentioned here. Its not rocket science , but there is a learning curve that goes with owning your own BH. Last thing i want to comment here - not a helpful one , but i find it odd that the BX1500's have a seat that turns backwards even if it doesnt come with a BH  Kubota cheap way of assembling on the line ? maybe.

prodirt -- If you want to get a BH, Then just go get it, you wont regret it. You gonna find other uses for it.:D

Once you get the hang of the BH operation, it's a no brainer. BH is definitely faster than a man with a shovel. I dug a few stumps up a couple of weeks ago and noticed that practically every scoop was full. Last year when I first got by BX, I was lucky to get a 1/4 bucket full. Now that I got the hang of it, I'll take anyone on with a shovel.

1*It's not something an informed / experenced operator would say.

2*I didn't know the seat did than on the BX1500 and I have 2 BX1500s.

Agree with every word of Mr. Radioman's post. I was PITIFUL with the BH when I first purchased. My wife would look at me out the window and wonder what I got into...I'd be riding a bucking bronco of a machine, spilling dirt everywhere, more of it spilling back into the hole than making it out. Sometimes I'd get things so crossed up I wouldn't have any choice but to let go of the controls, take 5 deep breaths, and start again very slowly.

Now I can hop on the machine and make wonderfully perfect holes, peel perfect 2" strips of sod off the top for later replacement, move individual sticks or roots out of the way of my main pile, and manipulate the bucket like I move my own hand. More often than not, I'm loading directly into the back of my side-by-side and get TOO MUCH dirt in the bucket...when I curl the bucket against the dipperstick to lift it high enough to get into the dumper bed, a bunch of dirt sluffs out since it is filled so high. I have to jag the bucket in the hole to level it off before I lift.

Absolutely amazing little item that I have not run out of uses for.

Justifications for purchase? I just completed a paver patio project that I would not have ATTEMPTED without my BH. I spent a total of $2,000 ($1,300 of which was for brick alone). The three bids I had beforehand were $6,000 to $9,000. It came out AWESOME (better than professional...more base stone, more detail, and more attention to quality...total investment of under 40 man-hours) and I saved about what my BH COST ORIGINALLY ($5,500). I completed one single project, and the money saved paid back every penny of my investment. My BH is now FREE!!! Pretty cool, I think.

Keith,
Looking at your lawn project pictures, you justified the purchase of the BX. You got a free TLB. That's a better deal than LBrown59 on his two BX1500s. LOL:eek:

...you justified the purchase of the BX.
I have made the point in the past. Adding up numbers that even my sometimes skeptical wife would believe, I've saved well over $14,000 by doing work on major projects myself instead of paying to have them done. This is work that I would NOT HAVE ATTEMPTED without my BX, work I (me, a card-carrying working stiff) completed ALONE (no assistance whatsoever from anyone) within a reasonable timeframe (confined to evenings/weekends), and resulted in absolutely professional finished products.

In that I am not including material costs, minor projects, convenience items, or even the cost of normal lawn care (which could have been done by me with a "lesser" machine). And this is not a simple multiplication of my tractor's hours. These are HARD DOLLARS SAVED a handful of major projects that I have documented in this forum...
---the grass/grading/rehab project ($6,000 bare min saved)
---the front landscaping project ($2,000 saved)
---the patio project ($4,000 bare min saved)
---the garden enclosure project ($250 saved)
---the conduit project ($250 saved)
---all the stumps I've removed (over 15...$1,500 min saved)
to name but a few. And this is all in 225 hours and 3 seasons of use.

I figure I'll have the entire tractor "paid off" by the end of next summer. Literally, the tractor will be completely and entirely free to me from that point forward.

My wife LOVES saving money and WAS NOT on-board with the idea of a $20,000 lawn mower. But she tells me time and time again how happy she is that we made the purchase. Very telling.

To the OP: Get the BH and don't look back. Do a few projects and you'll be in heaven. THe BX1500 will handle it just fine.
