Does anyone know how much fluid will run out if I unscrew the hydrolic fluid filter with out draing the fluid? I know a quart or so may but I don't want a couple of gallons to come out.

I would think all but I have never tried only removing it.

I don't know the answer, but assuming you are wanting to change it without changing the hydraulic fluid, I suppose it would depend on how fast you are... /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

To get a better answer it might help if you post the motivation for the question...

I don't think I have ever changed a filter before changing the oil, but I have done it the other way around. So I find your question curious... /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

You will lose only a small amout of oil. Usually just whats in the filter and a very small dribble from the trans. It is not like some of the B L and M models that will drain almost the whole trans if the filter is removed.

Nice to get an answer from some one who knows what they are talking about. I pulled it off and lost no more than 6 oz of oil plus what ever was absorbed in the filter. Took less than a quart to fill it back up. Thanks.

Sorry this is late, but I did mine the same way, I pulled it up on a bank so that the rear end was on the down hill end of the slope and only lost about the same amount as you did.

Sounds like you guys are chaning the filter but not the hydraulic fluid?

This seems odd to me...it never occured to me to change an engine oil filter but not the oil, for example...

Both my Kubota tractors specify hydraulic fluid and filter change at the same time...and specifically note to change both at 50 hours...which I did, even though the fluid looked as good as new.

So I am wondering, are some owners changing only the filter at 50 hours? Or are you changing the filter more frequently than the arecommended transmission fluid/filter change interval? Which is every 200 hours on my BX and every 300 hours on my B2910...

Well I wasn't gona answer you but it seems you really want to know so here is why. When I had the dealer do the 50 hour service He did not have any filters and they were on back order so rather than wait an unknown lenght of time maybe weeks we just changed the fluid and no filter. You can't change if you ain't got it. So now I got the filter and the fluid is clean and only got 50 hours on it so rather than throw away 10 quarts of fluid not counting the hassel of disposing of it I just changed the filter.

I work in the Heavy Construction Industry, we seldom change Hydro oil in our fleet of heavy equipment from a 2000 lb skid loader to a 150,000 lb excavator we do have a strict maintenance schedule which is every 250 hrs, engine oil, engine oil filters, air cleaner and hydro filters, and the engine oil is sampled and tested every 2nd or 3rd change, I guess that I got in the habit that when you change the engine oil and filter you change the hydro filter. I guess that I should mention that we run a lot of Hydraulic Impact Breaker attachments and no matter how careful you are when you switch from hammer to buck you get dirt/particals in the fluid. Hence the filter change. Actually now in some of our machines the manufactures have approved the use of 15w40 motor oil in the hydro systems so we only have do deal with one oil in the field... its nice...
