The black smoke indicates that its getting fuel to the cylinders. The white smoke is generally a sign of water/coolant getting into the cylinders /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif
Check the oil, what your looking for is to see if theres any water(white soapy residue) or antifreeze in it. Sometimes you won't be able to tell if theres coolant in the oil tank so you also want look for the oil level to be higher than normal.
Could be that it blew a head gasket. Since theres no sparkplugs to remove to easily do a compression test, looking for any sign of coolant in the oil or oil in the radiator is about the easiest way to tell if theres a leak. To test the compression on diesels you need to be able to remove the injectors.
Good luck
