BX 2200 - Engine Stops abruptly and will not start

The black smoke indicates that its getting fuel to the cylinders. The white smoke is generally a sign of water/coolant getting into the cylinders /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Check the oil, what your looking for is to see if theres any water(white soapy residue) or antifreeze in it. Sometimes you won't be able to tell if theres coolant in the oil tank so you also want look for the oil level to be higher than normal.

Could be that it blew a head gasket. Since theres no sparkplugs to remove to easily do a compression test, looking for any sign of coolant in the oil or oil in the radiator is about the easiest way to tell if theres a leak. To test the compression on diesels you need to be able to remove the injectors.
Good luck

Is there a safety switch that could have come loose?
Also, when I start the tractor and hold the key in the "on" position the engine runs. Maybe the ignition switch is bad?

Is white smoke not unburnt fuel in the cylinders?

Very good, more info = easier to trouble shoot. Sounding more electrical now except that black smoke then white smoke are almost conflicting problems. One indicates fuel is getting to the cylinders while the other generally means coolant is also getting in there. White blue smoke generally indicates oil is burning with the fuel and a thick blue cloud of smokey = alot of oil is burning in the cylinders.

Do you mean to say it'll start if you hold the key in the "start" position instead of the "on" position? It should return to the on position onc eyou release it from the start position. If so then that sounds like a bad ign key switch or associated circuit.
There is a 15amp fuse and a timer involved in the fuel shutoff solenoid circuit. But since you can hear both the fuelpump run and the fuel shutoff solenoid click when the switch is "on" then that is misleading too......

So you should check all the fuses under the dash and check and make sure all the connections are good & tight.

Generally the safety switches will prevent the starter from even cranking over so I tend to think that it's not the switches but theres always exceptions.
I'd still double check all of them for a good tight connection and make sure they either make or break when whatever actuates them opens or closes them.
It could be the seat safety switch but my BX23 will start whether I'm sitting on the seat or not, the gear range selector muct be in neutral but then again, if it's not the starter won't even crank.

So lets check the switch.
You'll need to pull the switch inorder to test it and you'll need either a volt/ohm meter or a continuity tester. With the switch out and with the key in the "on" position you should read continuity (a short) between the terminal labled 30 and the terminal labled AC. If it reads open then the key switch is bad.

If you are good with electronics then you can wire around the switch i.e. hot wire the tractor to "on" to see if it'll run. IF so then more than loikely the switch is bad.

At least it's not sounding like anything serious now /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I meant the start position. When it goes back to the "on" position the engine dies. The fuses and connections seem to be ok.

Thanks for your help today! I will try and tackle it again tomorrow.
