I should of asked this question before I left the dealer, but I figure I'll give the TBN'ers a chance to set me straight. I bought a set of filters (1 engine oil, other hydraulic system). However, neither came marked for the respective service (Both say oil filter on the box). One of them is grey and closely matches the original hydraulic filter, so I assume it's the hydraulic filter. The second is white and is shorter then the original engine oil filter, with no hex flats on the can. I assume this is the engine filter. It also appears to have a check valve diaphram (again makes me think it's the engine oil filter). Before I install these, do I have it correct?

Secondly, we're all aware of the lack of access to get the engine oil filter on and off. With the shorter filter with no flats, how the heck does Kubota expect you to remove this thing when the time comes???? It seems like it would make sense to make these a little longer so they protrude out of the cowling a little. If I have them confused and the short one is for the hydraulics, then it's not a problem to get to.

I'll get the P/N's off the boxes tonight.

As far as which filter is which, I think you've got that right. As far as getting a filter off that has no flat spots on the back end, I prefer the 3-legged filter wrench, but the different strap wrenches, or even big channel locks work.

You have them correct. I think if you do a search you are not alone here. On my BX22 I have to remove the front grill hard (bx metal = major pain) and then remove the sides (ok job)

I have gotten a couple of the filters without any flats. I have changed my removal technique with them. I have had success with using a strap wrench, reaching down from the hood area. I first tried this while helping a friend who still had his loader attached. Might be worth a try.

Thanks folks. I can't believe they don't make the engine oil filter more accessable. A filter that's two inches longer would make a huge difference. The original was alright, the shorter replacement one is a joke. In the future I'm looking for an aftermarket filter with more length.

I have had no problem using a strap type wrench or the 3 legged type. I also never had to remove any sheet metal from the tractor, if you are you are not using the correct tool for the job. Either of these tools are less than $15.00.

I don't disagree that you can remove it with a 3 legged wrench. A strap wrench might be a bit of a PITA on the shorter filter.

I still think Kubota could extend the filter some.

From the other side of the fence the first call would be why did they have to put such a long filter on it that it has to stick out the hood so that tree limb could hit it! ? /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

I've used the strap wrench on the shorter filter and it really wasn't a problem. The strap type wrench I use has a long reach, I'd say about one foot. That makes it easy to use on the short filter. Once you try it you'll see its not so bad.
