I've recently seen some mention of a mulching kit available for decks on the bx models. I did some searching but haven't seen much on these. If anyone has used this are you happy with the results you get?

I bought one with my new BX. It came installed. I really didn't have much to mow, and ended up taking it off when I needed to mow some weeds with it. So I really can't evaluate the goodness/badness of it's performance.

But I can tell you it is NOT a quick thing to take off/put on. If you plan to get one, you should install it and be done with it. If/when I get a consistent place to mow, I plan to re-install it.

Sorry I can't be of more assistance to you.

I'd be happy if I could figure out a way to just block the chute on deck. I'm trying to mulch leaves, and that thing has so much power that the leaves don't get chopped up too much, they just end up two counties away. If anyone has fabricated a chute block so that the leaves stay under the deck a little longer, pictures and/or description would be great

I did a mulch plug project on my BX23's 60"MMM as a winter project and after a full season of usage I've got mixed reviews out of it's performance.
It did pretty good on my front 1 acre lot as long as I kept up on it. A minimum of once a week was required to keep it up. Let it get away and I'd have to either slow down to a crawl or go back over the small windrows that it left.

It didn't do very well at all in the tall stuff in my lower lying field. It grows much faster & thicker than the front yard. I discarded the plug midway through the summer and went back to side discharging into windrows, then I would run over the windrows several times with the mulch plug installed.
I eventually added a Cyclone Rake to my arsenal and use it to pickup those windrows now.

I have a huge amount of leaves that fall annually and the mulch plug was not able to grind them up enough, hense the Cyclone Rake.

I didn't try the mulching blades though, and I still may try them out before it's all said and done beause I'm still going to use the plug when mowing the front next season.

I liked the gator mulching blades that I recently put on my bx 60" mower. I've only mowed my three acres three times with it. However I did see it as a definite improvement and worth the $65. The grass and leaves are definitely more chewed up. It also sucks up the grass and wet grass/leaves much better.
I used blade #90-987 which is made for another Kubota deck that has 1.125" spindles. I made bushings to reduce the diameter to the correct diameter. These blades have higher lift than standard blades, so they do make a little more noise.

I purchased the kit for my 60" bx deck, due to the amount of hay the mower was making.

The kit consisted of 2 baffle "plates" for the upper part of the deck, then an additional left baffle plate, and the 3 blades. I think I had about 300 into the whole deal when I was done.

It was a fairly straightforward install, just required alligning the plates and drilling a few holes. Nothing more than a few hrs to finish.

I am pretty happy with the results. It takes the major volume area out of the picture, and really does a nice job of chopping the clippings. I have ran mine thru some fairly tall stuff, and it just walks right thru.

It isn't a super perfect cut, like some are expecting, but its not hack looking at all. If you dont try to go too fast, it does pretty good. I would like to see more lift from the blades, but gators are always an option there.

I will enclose a few pics of the install, and a chunk of grass I mowed... Posts to follow!

underside view from the old discharge side. You can see how it really cuts the volume down of the underside.

Finally, the results...

I would think with some better lift blades, it would do a bit better in the final cut. It has a bit of a problem pulling the tire tracks up. As you can see tho, it still looks pretty good!

I have the Kubota mulching kit on the 54" deck on my BX1500. I'd have to agree with IndyChris. I like the way it chops up clippings and leaves that "bagged" look, but it doesn't seem to have very much lift. I bought mine new with the mulching kit installed so I don't have any experience with the standard blades, but I would think they would have a lot more lift.

It seems to cut fairly even and do pretty well on my bermuda sod in the front yard, but doesn't do quite so well with the tall fescue in the back. I think it's because the bermuda is thicker.

If you go 2 weeks without cutting and try to cut over about 1/2" off the grass at a time it will leave small rows of clippings. But, I have been trying to cut my grass at least once or twice a week and it does fine.

Thanks for all of the good information. The pictures really help in understanding whats involved if I want to go with it. I'm planning an upgrade in the spring and might just order the new MMM with the kit.

Here is a link to several close-up pictures of the standard and mulching blades.

I'll be a wanting to try out the Gator blades when available for the BX.

I wonder why Kubota is offering a new deep deck as an option for the new 2006 BX models??????????? /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Did they see a need for improvement? Concerning the look of the finish cut to my lawn when using the mulching kit and blades, my answer would be yes. No, not a total crap finish but for the expense of the unit (deck + mulching kit) - should be better.

I purchased a OEM mulch kit for 54 inch mower on BX220o. Didn't get around to installing it first year. Ran it all this summer and thought it worked great. As with most mulchers if grass gets too tall you need to mow it twice. Power is no problem but you can get some clumps of cut grass if it is superlong. In general I like mine. As someone else said you do not want to take it off and on because it is a fair amount of work.
