BX Transmission Filter Change

Are you guys really that cheap that you can't afford to change a few gallons of oil at 50 hours? Just imagine how broke you'll be when you lose your transmission from lack of maintenance.

The fluid from my BX1860 had small flecks of shavings in it. I replaced the oil, and also lost the annoying whine that my tractor had. My new B2601 will have the same service when it reaches 50 hours. Engine oil, filters and strainer as well.

I did all the fluid on mine at 50hrs and used sudt2. I was advised that it was a waste of money, but I like that it doesn't whine near as much.

I don't have a BX but my 3 hydro Kubotas had lots of large chunks on the magnet at the filter, but they were on the dirty side, not the clean side. My L5740 has now had 3 changes and I'm still surprised at how much crud the magnet collects; however, this is all from the transmission housing and all oil goes through 2 filters before it gets to the hydro.

A reason for using SUDT2 is it's improved cold flow properties. Having a suction filter, the noise is lack of oil at the pump(s). Yes you will save $$ on oil changes and if you don't use your tractor too many hours, you probably won't notice the component life reduction. Also users in the south won't have problems seen in the colder tiers. My dealer told me that since I kept the tractor that gets used in the winter in a heated garage, I shouldn't spend the extra bucks but I thought about the cost of the oil vs the cost of a transmission rebuild and figured why not. Probably overkill but it's much less expensive than a breakdown in the middle of a job.

I'd change the oil for peace of mind. Small potatoes in the big picture. Just my $0.01 and the way I do things.

A picture is worth a thousand words.....BX22 strainer screen.

All hydraulic oil drained out when screen was removed have catch pan ready.

A friend of mine changed just the spin on hydraulic filter on his bx and the only fluid he lost was the fluid in the filter. No vacume cleaner was used, no jack stands and no jacking the tractor up on one side. He just spun the filter off and spun the new one on. No mess no fuss.....I know I was standing beside the tractor when he did it.

Pulling the suction screen is a whole different ballgame. I you pull the suction screen with out draining the fluid before hand you will have a huge mess to clean up.

You won't lose much fluid by just changing the filter, especially if you're prepared and make reasonably quick swap.

On the screen, being prepared with a 1" tapered rubber stopper plug and you'll lose only an ounce or two of fluid. Just another option to the vacuum method if you don't have a helper or shop vac. These cost only a buck or so at your local hardware store. You can pull that screen and clean it whenever you wish with no meaningful fluid loss.

Most all this is just a matter of being prepared to do the job.
