Buying Advice BX vs B for mowing

   / BX vs B for mowing #11
From reading threads, I've gotten the impression that the BX line is better at mowing than the B series. Is that true and why?
I believe from my reading that the BX is used more for mowing because you can't do a lot more with it. It is more suited for mowing with less ground clearance.
I've just bought 5 acres. The whole thing is a hill and one side is somewhat steep, but don't think it will be a problem.

The primary use will be mowing, but we will be building and landscaping soon. Also, I hope to smooth out some of the bumpy field over time.
How much of that do you WANT to mow? How much more are you going to get?
I have looked at used BX2200, BX2350, BX2360, B7500, and B7800 (as well as a John Deere 2305 and 2210). I'm not sure what all I will use it for, but I want a FEL in addition to a 60" MMM.

Thoughts? Suggestions?
Thoughts:
To ME even a quarter acre around the house is more than I WANT to mow.
Big lawns are a marketing strategy for Scott's.
If you plan on mowing much more than 2 acres I'd say get a zero turn.

The B's beat the BX's in ground clearance, lift capacity and HST fan breakage. I've never had and don't plan to have a BX.

Don't trust everything JohnThomas writes because he lives at Barlows :) And despite saying he had kicked his Kubota trading addiction he continues to do so :) and very well!

I on the other hand am addicted to a backhoe on my B7610.

Suggestions:
You are probably looking at buying your first of many tractors. Properly taken care of they should last for a long time. If you decide on a tractor the "little B's" (< 30 HP) should do all you need for 5 acres. They are about 4' wide (good for getting thru gates), have over a foot of clearance, and a lift capacity at 24" beyond the lift point of > 1,000lbs (half ton) .

The BX's are all < 45" wide, have < 9" clearance, lift capacity of 670 lbs at 24" and much smaller front tires.

If you plan on moving much dirt, carrying ten 50lb bags of anything, picking up an old Freezer

or moving a log you'll need the extra capacity.

You can usually mow with the larger tractor, but you can't always lift with the smaller.

BP,
do you have a MMM or a RFM on you "B"? How's the mowing compared to your former BX? I'm considering moving to a "B" due to my increase gardening. And my arthritic hands just can't take much more hoeing.:( But I really love to hand hoe because it's so peaceful and uncomplicated. :)

Did not have a MMM on the BX nor the B. Yes, RFM. Lawn mowing isn't all that important to me, priority wise. We have a yard, not a lawn. We're delighted to have nice grass, when it rains properly, but it just isn't a priority amidst the work we have to do out here. I'm very pragmatic about it all. Get 'er done, with the least amount of expense, time and effort. Hope that makes sense.

I also never wanted to put the fool MMM on, and MMM off, over and over again. Not what I wanted. Each guy does what's best for his own situation.

For whatever it's worth, I spent much of the last year obsessing over whether I should buy a BX, a B or a smallish L. My brand new B2620 was delivered just last Friday with a FL, 60" MMM, remotes and some other goodies. I promptly removed the loader and mowed a few acres of community property I help maintain. Trees, fences to mow around, a few hills. It does a fantastic job. Then I took her home, put the loader back on and moved some telephone poles that have been in my way for years. I looked long and hard at the BX25 & BX26 but couldn't be happier that I went with the slightly larger tractor.

have a B2920, found out when I bought it that with the 60" MMM you can NOT use wheel spacers for stability, they interfere with the anti scalp wheels on deck.
Told a friend not to consider a grass catcher with B2920 because if it doesn't cut it fine enough the first pass, go over excess cut grass a second time and it disappears, no need to catch or rake.
My B2920 is way oversized for my yard (takes about 15 min. to cut) but is right size for digging and fork lift use as well as my 400 feet of driveway snow.

That's a good tip on going over the cuttings a second time. I ended up doing just that on some of the heavier areas. I was also cutting grass that hadn't been cut yet this year. I considered renting a rotary cutter for the the first cut but the 60" MMM had no trouble at all.

I had BX25 with mmm. Was really pleased with the way it cut grass.
Moved up to a b2620 with mmm and cut as well as the BX. But zI can't
the grass as short as I want, because the clippings are really heavy.
I alao use a 5' rfm. Reardischarge. Very nice cut, but I can't cut as low
as I would like. I have watch to the rear when close to objests that
I don't want to hit with the rfm, or cut down, and alsoo pay attention
ro where I am going. With mmm, i can look down at mower
edges without haveing to look to the rear. That is a plus for thr
mmm in my book.
Also, if you store tractor inside: If it stsrts to rain, with mmm
you just run it inside and park. With the rfm, you will have to
unhook, before heading for shelter:thumbsup:
