I believe from my reading that the BX is used more for mowing because you can't do a lot more with it. It is more suited for mowing with less ground clearance. From reading threads, I've gotten the impression that the BX line is better at mowing than the B series. Is that true and why?
How much of that do you WANT to mow? How much more are you going to get?I've just bought 5 acres. The whole thing is a hill and one side is somewhat steep, but don't think it will be a problem.
The primary use will be mowing, but we will be building and landscaping soon. Also, I hope to smooth out some of the bumpy field over time.
Thoughts:
To ME even a quarter acre around the house is more than I WANT to mow.
Big lawns are a marketing strategy for Scott's.
If you plan on mowing much more than 2 acres I'd say get a zero turn.
The B's beat the BX's in ground clearance, lift capacity and HST fan breakage. I've never had and don't plan to have a BX.
Don't trust everything JohnThomas writes because he lives at Barlows
I on the other hand am addicted to a backhoe on my B7610.
Suggestions:
You are probably looking at buying your first of many tractors. Properly taken care of they should last for a long time. If you decide on a tractor the "little B's" (< 30 HP) should do all you need for 5 acres. They are about 4' wide (good for getting thru gates), have over a foot of clearance, and a lift capacity at 24" beyond the lift point of > 1,000lbs (half ton) .
The BX's are all < 45" wide, have < 9" clearance, lift capacity of 670 lbs at 24" and much smaller front tires.
If you plan on moving much dirt, carrying ten 50lb bags of anything, picking up an old Freezer

or moving a log you'll need the extra capacity.
You can usually mow with the larger tractor, but you can't always lift with the smaller.
