Jon, I'd hate to see you disappointed, but I've bored a number of holes with a couple of different augers on tractors, and watched some others done, but I've never seen a 3-point hitch type on a tractor that would go more than 3' at the most. However, you can buy extensions for the auger shaft and do what you want to do; you just need to be aware of the fact that you'll have to bore the hole 30-36", stop with the auger in the hole, disconnect it from the head, raise the head with the 3-point, put the extension(s) on, drill on to the depth you want, stop again to remove the extension, and then hook up the auger again to lift it out of the hole before going to the next one. Now, in my opinion, that beats using the old manual tools that I have, but it does make for fairly slow progress.

If someone knows something different, let us know.

Damn it, I got screwed! I paid $290.00 too much. I knew I should have driven to PA! :)

What if you were to go ahead and drill all the holes to the length of the auger without the extension and then go back to the first one and install the extension on the auger? Then, when you proceed to the next hole, use the loader and a strap to remove the auger from the hole and transport it to the next hole with the extension in place. I've never used one but I could see how it might work.

I see no reason that wouldn't work, but would think it would be at least as time consuming as the other way. You'd have to disconnect/re-connect the PTO driveshaft, upper and lower links each time.

Is it possible to get a 3ph hydraulic auger that would go to 48"? Ive never seen one, but I know you can get such things for bobcats.

Of course, they would probably be so expensive I couldnt afford it. /w3tcompact/icons/frown.gif

If it goes on the 3ph, you'd still be limited by the height that the boom and 3ph could lift it. Don't know whether such exists or not. Of course, if it mounts on the FEL, Bobcat, or backhoe, that's another matter, but like you said, too expensive.

Bird,

I don't know for a fact, but I believe that the 3pt post hole digger that I borrow from my parents has a 4ft auger. The mast is massive and long, had to turn the pins around to the inside in order to mount on my TC40D. When raised high enough to clear the ground (by more than 6 inches) the auger does not hang straight but at a 10 degree angle. The auger will hang straight just as the tip hits the ground.

What auger size (diameter) do most people use? This auger is a 12" and when going through clay can create quite a load on the engine.

Dave, you may be right, but will the 3ph allow the head to drop all the way to the ground so the entire auger goes in? Just because I've never seen one doesn't mean they don't exist./w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif And I've seen augers of lots of different sizes advertised for sale, but all my personal experience has been with 9" augers.

Bird,

The auger head will drop the top of the auger within 4 inches of the ground. If I adjusted the mast to use a different set of holes it could drop even further, but then the auger would not be straight when it touched the ground (if I only had a bigger tractor /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif).

I noticed a picture on some post recently that showed someone's Kubota with a post hole auger. http://www.tractorbynet.com/forumfiles/35-57937-hole2.jpg That setup was smaller than the one I use. Is this one a typical size?
