Hello all,
I'm having trouble maintaining an idle on my BX2200. Water in the fuel shouldn't be a problem as I have recently changed the filters (I have had problems with water in the fuel before). This seems entirely different though. As soon as I engage my MMM PTO the engine bogs down and shakes violently. Thinking it had to do with the MMM I checked for binding, none. Then, w/o the PTO engaged the same thing happened. At WOT I barely rev above an idle and moments later it starts shaking. This has gotten progressively worse in the last half hour and can barely idle the thing. I'm thinking fuel pump? (255hrs on machine). I can't recall, if I turn the key am I supposed to hear a whine from the pump? Any ideas? Thanks.

Sounds like water in the fuel to me. Just because you changed the filters doesn't mean that all of the water has been removed from the fuel system. Did you drain some fuel out of the tanks when you changed the filters? You do that to flush out any remaining water.

I won't repeat any of the numerous comments that appear here pertaining to using anti-water fuel additives, buy fuel at truck stops not quickie stores, get a Mr Funnell, etc. etc. because I would be repeating what has already beeen said (but I see that I already did, so never mind...) /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif.

Or, there could be air in the fuel line still.

regards,

Mahlon

classic symptoms of water in the fuel. Drain the tank, and then using a Mr. Funnel, reinstall the fuel and allow it to settle in the tank for a few hours, then drain again so you remove all the moisture that is in the tanks. I would do this a few times and each time check the Mr Funnel until you see no signs of water. Then put in new filters and you should be good. Always use the Mr Funnel when fueling and don't store the fuel during the summer months. Humid air causes the moisture to collect in the containers. I would also be careful where I purchased fuel. You might have a bad fuel supplier.

I think you and Mahlon might be right on. I do use a 5 gallon metal jerry can for my fuel and it's never full. No, I did not drain the tank when changing filters. I thought frequent changing would be OK. Guess not! I went outside before and "primed" the fuel line (in case of trapped air) and it was better but not enough power to engage the PTO. I'll do a search on this "Mr. Funnel" and drain, change filters and refuel with fresh fuel. I'll let you know but you've given me the idea that you've seen this rookie mistake (on my part) before. Thanks again.

I am too tired to look for it in these 6 pages, but there is a place that sells them for airplanes that has the best price. It is somewhere in this thread. If not, do a search for Mr Funnel in the Oil forum and you will find more information about them than you could read in an evening. Also, if you do a search using the same term in this forum you will also find a discussion as to size for the BX...... Got to get back to work.... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Thanks for the "leads". Dumb question for you. Since I was changing the fuel filters so often I went to a local auto parts store and found a Fram (G2 I believe) that was physically the same size. At about a third the price, and easily available too, I started using these. Did I make a mistake or are you of the opinion that these filters are doing the same job as the $10.00 Kubota filters?
Thanks,
Dave

If you don't have water in the system, they are probably fine. I would contact Fram and determine the micron size of the filter and then ask the question of Kubota Technical service. There is a good possibility that they are the same. Carefully check the physical characteristics of them both for difference.

I'd have to say that's definitely water in the fuel. Exact same symtoms I experienced about two weeks ago or so. DRAIN THE TANK. Put about a quart of good fuel in and pump than through the line before you re-attach it to the engine. You should be fine after that.

Yep, ditto on the bad fuel suggestion. I had a bout of water that haunted me for a couple weeks. Finally drained it all, new fuel, conditioner and all has been well since. I've been looking to add a water separater to the fuel system. Anyone done this or know where to find a good add on?

Just ordered 2 Mr. Funnels
Never gave this much consideration before- guess I have been lucky with my fuel source!!!!!

Seems like gas engines burn off small quantities of water easier- with just some roughness- is this true??
Also- is it possible or advisable to add drygas to diesel fuel??

I have a Yanmar fuel filter equipped with a plastic bowl that I bought to try this out. This particular filter is typically used on their small diesels, like sailboat auxiliaries, and probably also used on their small tractors. Quite a nice unit & would fulfill the need for a small water separator, but I haven't figured out how to wriggle it into the small spaces of a BX2200 as a "primary" filter. Yet.

Full-size water separating filters (like Racors & such) are too big to fit, unfortunately.

what about parts from a JD 2210 or MF 2300 or other comparable competitor? anybody know what they use? I just went through this $20 song and dance myself Too much $ for such a common problem, must be a better way....
