Should the speed range lever for the transmission be set to neutral when back hoeing.

I find that the tractor is difficult to move immediately after back hoeing if I leave the speed range level in low. Once I get the tractor moving (put the throttle at 2500 rpm) the tractor runs just fine.

Is this a problem then others have seen?

What's the manual say?

Do you mean difficult to shift into low range from neutral? I've been leaving mine in low range while using the backhoe, (FEL down/ P brake on) no problems getting it to go afterwards. If the problem is shifting, the manual says to lightly tap the fwd or reverse pedal, and then shift. I've had to do this several times.

You wouldn't happen to be leaving the parking brake on...would you? /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I would be smartest to keep the tractor in N while using the BH. Otherwise, you might have unintended tractor motion.

I put mine in "N" while using the BH. Havent had any problems yet /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Some folks like to put it in "N" so they can adjust tractor position with the hoe.

In most cases I leave it in low so I can turn around and move the tractor slightly forward or back with my hand on the pedal. Safety police may frown on that, but in many instances it works well.

Me too. I found that I can lean back, and move tha tractor with my hand on the peddle easier than moving it with the hoe. Plus if you pick up everything (loader, outriggers) it won't roll with you facing backwards away from the steering and brake. That was a fun half second that seemed like an hour untill I remebered to dig the hoe in.

I leave it in gear also so I can move a few feet without moving seat. Never had a problem, I leave the loader on the ground and have the stabalizers down to keep me in place.

My 23 i leave in gear for the reach around and move trick. The tires on front and back should be off the ground when digging any way.
