Cab Regrets?

I had a late 70's IH2500b that had a cab. I made the mistake of using it in thick, heavy woods. Almost every window was cracked, mirrors snapped, wiper bent, etc... And in summer, as a mower, it was brutal. If you try and mow tall weeks with cab doors open, it just sucks all the dust in. If it is not sealed well and does not have air conditioning to provide positive air pressure to keep the dust out, its not going to help with allergies. Also, I'd leave it on my property over the winter, tarped, and in the spring, I'd find dead animals guts inside it. Something would use it for a dining room.

Didn't know I was allergic to stinging insects until this summer, so I would definitely regret an attack by some aggressive yellow jackets or bees without a cab. Ditto rocks and other objects flying from a cutter -- allergic to those too My little one is especially little, so the cab is also ideal even without a buddy seat.

Mowed ~3.5 acres of yard with ZTR today, and was kind of bummed when I realized that on nice days the cab is an isolated box with no wind or fresh air except from the climate control, an open window, or if on the BH perch behind the cab. Also it is easier/faster/less expensive to just duck around tree limbs, jump on/off, etc.

The only "ideal" solution is 2 tractors, but I'd have to trade in a marriage to make that happen!

No regrets whatsoever. So nice coming home at night clean instead of looking like i rolled around in the mud when i mow......

i don't have a clue about your tractors that you are looking at...

*ughs* kids riding on tractor with you. *sorry* but it is a no for me. to many deaths and/or accident. these are not national media, news, but just local over the years doings.

with that said...make sure you have good visabilty for the FEL (Front end loader)
--they can be a pain in pastures / mowing under trees. and anything outside the cab (mirrors, lights) being torn off.
--if you get an oil leak inside the cab, it is a bad thing. from the fumes of the oil.
--can be a pain to clean out all the mud and crud that gets drug into a cab. (no easy way to break out the garden hose and give the inside of the cab a good washing)
--outside windows can be one heck of trick at times, to wash. there high up, and the rear tires, 3pt hitch, engine, etc.. all right there, even with a short ladder no real easy way to reach over everything and clean the windows at times.
--bees, wasps, etc... if they find there way in, it can be a tad dangerous getting them out of there.
--mice + lots of extra wires and places for them to nest *arghs*
--mice + a/c = a good tear down of roof to clean things out and get rid of dead mice and the nests.
--cab in summer + no a/c = can be hotter than, vs simple sun shade, due to no real air movement through cab.
--cab's technically have a higher COG (center of gravity) meaning more likely to tip / roll over. due to so much more extra weight up high.
--farmers, were they drive tractors to work, and ride them when working, cab is a no brainer.
--weekend warriors. might find an open station better. easier to get on/off (not having to deal with doors)
--those with sheds that can park there tractor in, open or cab does not matter. though cab = higher door height to get tractor in.
--those folks parking there tractor outside, more so for folks with snow. a cab can be a huge plus. just getting the bloody wind off of you, (without heat) can be huge. and not having to set in a pile of snow, to start the tractor up.

with above all said, if you can spare the cash for a cab, i would get one. there nice, it is the one thing you will always hear well most of the time, if you don't have a cab you want one, and if you have a cab, it is just a second thought. and don't look back at it. ya need to remember a tractor is not a buy and toss away thing, it is going to be there for a few long years to come.

though, i normally give a statement to some folks on buy/pricing/comparing forums. buying a bigger tractor with more HP (horse power) vs a smaller tractor, with all the little extra options. all the little extra options, cab being a possible option. can be extremely nice, granted it takes more time to get jobs done vs bigger tractor, but for a multi purpse tractor that will see a little of everything, (more so if you are a week end warrior / diy'er ). those extra options can help speed up a variety of tasks, and help give a more professional final look with less time dealing with a given task.

i would say read some threads in the "buying / comparing" forum. more so threads with more than 20 posts (shows 2 to 4 plus pages of posts), and give some more detail, of what you will be doing with tractor.... it will help folks, better help you, and possibly make other suggestions that you may not have thought of.

Well after read the last post not one of reasons on the list makes me not grateful that I got the cab. Every time I turn the key I am happy.

I debated this for a while too. I finally bought a larger than planned tractor and a cab to boot (72hp). I bought a LS P7010C. I have some trees to trim due to rouge limbs. I have learned to just not drive under them. There is SOME visibility issues, but the positives out weigh ANY negatives in the Cab vs Non Cab discussions.

Cabs do cost more initially. You have to maintain door seals, gaskets, filters, and HVAC system to have a functional cab. When these fail and you don't want/can't repair, it will become very uncomfortable. It was 88 degrees yesterday and I had to turn the AC down because I was cold. No yellow jackets, no rain, no dust, no mud, always comfortable.

Would I do it again, you bet! My next tractor will be a 40'ish HP LS Cab Hydro for the wife.

I can't image not having a Cab just bought the LS 7010C with a cab, best thing ever, It can rain, snow, blow run over a under ground bee nest with Brush Hog Who cares keep on mowing..

I love my P7010C! I agree with a previous poster that sometimes I miss the open air. However, 90% of the time I love the AC (it's hot in Texas 9 months of the year) and radio. I can go out in rain, snow, heat, etc... and get jobs done comfortably. The grandkid can ride along (not during real work) and be safe inside. He loves it inside!

Also, it help reduce my redneck factor!
