My east neighbor had a large cable and they cut it twice with an axe. Keeping that in mind i put up a simple coated clothes line cable w/surveyor tape tied every foot, which was just looped onto an open eyelet. I figured it gets the point across and only cost about $6. The only problems i have had in 5 years was from those that i had given permission....live and learn! If they are h-bent on getting in, nothing will stop them.

That sums up my take on things. If they're going to get in, a batallion of Abrahms tanks won't slow 'em up. No sense in building a fortress. In fact, that becomes a challenge to some kids. ( "Kids" can be 50 years old in some cases)

A neighbor of mine decided to stop ATVers from using his drive. He installed a 1/2" cable across the entrance. A 12 year old hit it at full song on his 4-wheeler, nearly killing him. The neighbor lost almost everything he owned in a lawsuit.

I've heard of people using "game cams" to catch folks in the act of tresspassing or damaging ones gate. It needs to be the kind that has no flash or it will be seen and destroyed. Pics of the action may make the local PD a little more likley to prosecute.

City/County just north of us are using cameras to catch and prosecute people dumping in several areas. It seems to be working. Violators are being sentenced to communitee service, cleaning up dump sites. BRAVO!

It does help to know people in the police dept. Several years ago I found a nice but very stuck 4WD pickup on my property. Quite a bit of damage had been done by the truck. I called the sheriff and soon after the call the owner and a tow truck showed up. I refused to let them on the property. About that time the sheriff showed up, he backed me up and helped me to get a damage bond placed on the truck. The owner had to get a 10,000 damage bond before he got his 35,000 truck back :) took about 3 days for the paperwork and such too :)
I hired a friend to fix the damage and strangely enough his fees ate up almost all of the damage bond.
Sometimes justice is served, but not very often. Property was clearly posted no trespass btw.

Well going by all the information from people with experience I will save myself some work and probably just put a cable or cheap gate between two trees and call it good. No need to spend a great deal of time and money if it has a high probability of being torn down. My main concern is dumping and most illegal dumpers want to get rid of their stuff quickly so maybe if its just not wide open and I make it known that there is someone on the property occassionally that will hopefully be enough.

A handy trick is to put the cable close enough to the road that the dumper can't quite get his vehicle off of the road into your driveway. Meaning he has to dump from the lane. If he is doing that then he may as well dump anywhere along the road and your driveway is less attractive. Also harder to hide behind the vehicle while defeating your cable.

The quickest way to attract looters, dumpers, and trespassers is to post a for sale sign.

I wonder if some picture signs similar to Ford peeing on Chevy might send a message. For example, Land owner peeing on trespassers or Landowner pointing Gun at trespasser. That might make them think twice. Not that you would do anything like that in reality, but that is probably how some might feel.:)

Chili,
Naw I don't shoot at them, but I like to make them think I am :)
Just a conicidence that I check out the old 20 GA shot pattern at the same time that tresspassers are on my property. #6 shot going though the treetops tends to sound closer than it is I suppose :)
Had one bunch call the law on me, I told the sherriff that I did not expect anyone to be back in there since it was posted. He just grinned and left.
