Chili,
Naw I don't shoot at them, but I like to make them think I am :)
Just a conicidence that I check out the old 20 GA shot pattern at the same time that tresspassers are on my property. #6 shot going though the treetops tends to sound closer than it is I suppose :)
Had one bunch call the law on me, I told the sherriff that I did not expect anyone to be back in there since it was posted. He just grinned and left.

That was heart warming! Good job.

A very good buddy of mine in California had some land next to a Park. They had a terrible time with tresspassers, but they didn't get along with the Park Rangers, or those in charge, so nothing was ever done.

One day he came across two guys on there land. He told them to get the h*** off his land. One of them responded, yeah, what are you going to do about it? My friend said he had a gun in his truck and if he went to get it, they'd find out.

That's almost a direct quote.

They called the cops and had my buddy arrested for terrorist threats. That was on a Saturday and he had to stay in jain until Monday morning. The judge through it out and no charges were ever filed. But when we were going on a hunting trip up to Canada a few years later, the Canadian Border people wouldn't let him in because the charges show up on there computers. Even though he was never charged with anything, there is still a record of the arrest.

This happened about a year after Columbine, but we never knew if that had some relevance, or if it was just crazy California law.

The Park took the land by eminent domain from them a few years after that. They said they needed the land to preserve it from development more than my buddy did.

Anyway, my point is that anything you say, or do, can come back to haunt you.

A neighbor of mine decided to stop ATVers from using his drive. He installed a 1/2" cable across the entrance. A 12 year old hit it at full song on his 4-wheeler, nearly killing him. The neighbor lost almost everything he owned in a lawsuit.

So if people trespass your property and got hurt, they can sue you for everything you owned:confused: ???? If that's the case, then it's a good way to acquire land.:D Just ride an ATV to look for land you like and crash into something, file a lawsuit and... it's your land.:D :D :D

"So if people trespass your property and got hurt, they can sue you"

Yep, that's how my insurance agent explained it to me. You owe tresspassers a level of protection, guests a little more, and officials like power meter readers even more.

This must be true and I will share a story with you. It's off the subject but applies to Highbeam's reply.
When I bought a building for my company, I wanted to hang a sign with company name on it. It was a 27,000sq ft building about 30' tall on the outside. I was told by the city I needed a permit and in order to get one, I needed to supply a drawing of the sign, how it is attached and how to get to it. So I did. My drawings were rejected because I did nto include any permanent steps...or scaffling to the sign. The city said it would be unsafe for taggers (kids, people) who spray paint graffitti on signs!!! So I asked them if they were kidding and they said no.  I told them they were nuts and never applied for the permit again. Can you believe that? What has happened to common sense?

Vermont has some very good laws on ATV's. Among them are all ATV's have to be registered unless you are driving on your own land, you need written permission from the landowner if you are on his/her land, but one of the best is: "No public or private landowner shall be liable for any property damage or personal injury sustained by any person operating or riding as a passenger on an all-terrain vehicle or upon a vehicle or other device drawn by an all-terrain vehicle upon the public or private landowner's property, whether or not the public or private landowner has given permission to use the land unless the public or private landowner charges a cash fee to the operator or owner of the all-terrain vehicle for the use of the property or unless damage or injury is intentionally inflicted by the landowner."

It's amazing to me that we tolerate the imbecilic laws that we do.

I'd never want to see a child hurt, but I don't owe anyone if he gets hurt trespassing on my property. How did we allow ourselves to get to the point where we are liable?

As for as trespassers who are big enough to know better, gunshots close enough will make a grown man invoke the name of a superior power and one even began crying. Another had a bullet hole in his tailgate. The sheriff asked why I shot the guys truck, I asked why the guy was backed up to my barn at 2AM. Neither sheriff or the guy have been back.

Post the sign my cousin has: If you can read this, your in range.

This is unbelievable! So, we should design something that's "safe" for criminals to commit crime against our property? What's next? When I design my house, I hope I don't need to include a provision that's "safe" for someone to break-in:confused: Sadly to say that our common sense and believe of private property right is a minority today.

You should read some past articles in the American Rifleman magazine that tells horror stories of burglers that are shot while committing the crime and the homeowner being sued for it....and losing in court!!!

I agree, I certainly don't want to see a kid or anyone for that matter get hurt, but Christ sake, they should abide the law too and respect other's property. After all, it's because of the law breakers we end up putting chains or gates on our entrances. Now we're at fault?...what's up with THAT?? It's just not right.
