Remember that a 7K rated trailer includes the weight of the trailer. Example: I have a 18' 7K rated car hauler. It is metal runners with open center. The trailer weighs 1200 lb so MAX payload is 5800 lbs. I suspect most solid floor trailers will weigh close to 2000 lbs.

You are forgetting to put back the tongue weight. You should see it like this:

7K Gross Trailer rating.
-1200 tare trailer weight.
+700 lb (10%) tongue weight.

Net trailer load = 6,500 if at max load and 10% is transferred to the tow vehicle.

Hey guys thanks for all the help I ended up with a 20' dovetail, 7000gvw, it was pretty close or even a bit over weight with the tractor and implements but made the 12hr trek pretty well, thanks again
