Can I buy a trailer for my tractor around $2000

You can get by with an 18' or 20' car hauler. 7000lb axles cuts it close. 10000lb axles would be better. Should be in your price range.

Yeah I was not advocating that particular trailer. Just illustrating that trailers with capacity for the OPs needs can be had for ~$2k all day long. Adding brakes to the 2nd axle is like a $100 proposition.

Yeah, USA Trailers has 6 locations. The "AMO" brand trailers are pretty economical, not so high end as PJ, Big-tex, etc, but should be pretty reliable.

Edit: I see their website prices are higher than their craigslist ad pricing. Check the "business" section of your local craigslist and search for trailers.

You can get a 10k-lb 18' equipment trailer for $2800 new. Thats my plan once I have spare funds available (ha).

Well i think i'm going to go through with the purchase of a 2016 mahindra 2538, I'll be driving from NY to north Carolina, and think I'm going to try and pick up a suitable trailer along the way or down there and sell my old 1989 16' trailer when I return, I'm gonna look for an 18' hopefully around 2k, thanks again guys, any more leads is greatly appreciated, thank you

I would agree. The car trailer deck is low enough, you would really only want the dovetail for pulling dead cars or equipment up. A dovetail might make more sense on a deck-over trailer though. If one needed to lower the rear of the trailer, backing the truck on to some 4"x6"x2' ramped end boards would probably be all you need.
When I bought mine the difference between a 7000# trailer and a 10000# trailer was only a few hundred dollars. I am really happy with my trailer and it handles my Ford tractor with ease. It would be a real disappointment to buy a 7000# trailer only to find out a few years from now that it would be nice to be able to haul another ton or so. Planning on hauling hay with it this summer, the extra GVW may come in handy then.

Call Kaufman trailers before you leave on your trip.
They make 100's of trailers, and just might have what you want in their lot.

I second this advice. I bought my 14' dump from them and are happy with the trailer and it was the best deal I could find.
