I have a Ford 2000 tractor with a scoop on the rear, how deep of pond can I dig. Is it even posible to do? The ground is just north of Houston, lots of sand with clay.

Short answer is YES.

You can dig a pond with a shovel if you wanted to.

Things you have to consider are

1. How big of a pond?
2. How long is it going to take you?
3. Have you considered renting equipment?

A scoop behind a small tractor will dig a pond to any depth you want. But there are certainly better tools for the job. So you have to weigh wear and tear on you equipment and how many hours you want to spend (and possibly getting a pump if it rains before you are done) vs the cost of renting the right equipment.

I have a friend that was digging one with a 3pnt scoop, it's about 100' x 200'. 8' at the deepest. He told me he started it in 1972 after he got back from V. Nam. He was still working on it in the mid 90's

So I guess you can do it.

As a young lad, I helped the neighbor dig his basement with a slip (that is a scoop that has handles and usually was pulled by horses) and very similar to what I think you have for a scoop on the 3 ph. I drove a small H John Deere to do the pulling and the repeated trips in and out of that basement hole (prolly for a 24 x 24' house) were endless. But we did get it done.

Most of the original railroad beds were done with gangs of slips and horses moving dirt.

Yes, it can be done. And the depth is only limited by the patience you have getting one scoop at a time. No other limitations that I can imagine unless you have a problem with water (seeping in or falling from the sky).
