As I reported in my reply, look around your house for some plant stakes, those little pieces of bamboo about 3/8" in diameter or if you have some on your property, just cut you a couple of small pieces. A small wooden dowel rod would work also and either of them is stiffer than a coat hanger wire
Thanks for the suggestion, Gary, but the object I'm searching for is rather long and narrow. If you envision the type of funnel you'd use to put ATF in a car, it's the lower half of a two-piece unit. The upper end of it was just narrow enough to go down through the filler neck (a misjudgement on my part). I figure it's laying on the bottom of the tank, and if I can get a wire hanger with a small hook on the end to go through it, the hook will catch and I can then pull it back up through the filler, or if I don't have luck there, through the larger hole on the top if I take the fuel gauge sending unit out.

Jim, for what you want (and more other uses than you'll know til you get some) go buy a roll of mechanic's wire (bailing wire more or less) - cheap, stiff enough for fairly heavy things, soft enough to bend into pretty complex shapes, etc... Steve

I dropped the spout into my Kioti fuel tank. tried to fish it out blindly...no luck. I went and borrowed one of those hand held cameras with the 2 foot flex ends, emptied out the fuel tank and went in for a look. i saw NOTHING...just black mass. i guess those cameras just dont throw enough light.

Anyways, been over 1 year ...and no fuel gauge issues. I would like it out, but noty sure how to go ablut it.

Turn the tractor upside down, and shake real hard. Should fall right out.:)

That sounds a lot like the definition of a coat hanger, but now I'm curious, and I'll be going past the hardware store tomorrow anyway...

It'll work. Or get some electric fence wire...........about any semi-stiff, small diameter wire wil do.

I've never used one of those cameras, but I'm surprised you weren't able to see with the tank empty. Just off-hand, do you know how big your tank is? Mine is 10.8 gallons according to the book. You're right, the tank is made of plastic, too. The spout should last just as long in there, and I bet my funnel will, too. But I still want it out.
