Some of the vehicles that come with synthetic from the factory do so because it is the only way they can keep them from breaking down due to the extremely high underhood temps. The Corvette, for one. Some are using synthetic from the factory to lower the friction so they can make their published fuel efficiency numbers.
Reading between the lines, I gather now that more and more engine cylinder walls are honed with plateau finishes, the need for a true breakin period is less, so putting in synthetic at the factory fill is more common.
