Can you buy too heavy of a rotary cutter?

Yes, semantics. I could careless what fictitious or marketing lingo a mfg tries to use to classify something. Like light, medium, heavy duty. Extreme, regular, premium, , homeowner, professional, commercial, industrial, etc.

When I said it was a light duty cutter, that wasn't meant as a reference to the mfgs meaningless classification. It was meant literally. A sub-600 pound 5' cutter, is indeed LIGHT duty

And when I replied it was meant to try and provide some standard means of actually comparing cutters. Just go out on Craigslist and see everyone claiming "Heavy Duty" to see that it's anything but.

Thanks for the correction on the Landpride classifications. I was mixing up the 1860 that I picked up for my B7800 with the "Medium Duty" 6' units I was comparing for my Kioti.

I don't believe that the manufacturer's labeling is meaningless. The basic basis of classification is gearbox HP and decking thickness.

I agree that weight is a factor in determining the duty level of a cutter, but it's usually a "byproduct" of the decking thickness. Or, rather, they can be seen as interchangeable metrics.

Didn't mean to agitate you. It's just that all of this was extremely confusing to me until I did a bunch of research: seems folks everywhere make claims about things being "heavy duty" but there usually isn't anything to support those claims.

"Medium Duty" cutters don't pop up around here. The 286 that I picked up is about as close as I could get: and the PO welded 1/4" plate steel on the decking, to that makes it almost a "Medium Duty" cutter. New 6' cutters run around $3,500. which wasn't really going to happen for me.
