Re: Can\'t Believe the Difference!

true, but what does that dino oil cost ? It cost more I'am sure .I have found that the more miles that you can put on an oil the more the cost, unless, there is a dino you know of I can buy for 1.50 that can go twice that. Only $18.75 savings ! Sounds like a good savings to me. & still saving time . Isn't time money ?

Re: Can\'t Believe the Difference!

Ken that's great its working out for you. I am curious if you experienced premature engine failures in the past with your engines using fossil based oil that could be attributed to the oil's performance or lack thereof.

PS, I certainly don't know why Mike is not here, I had no problem with him staying. I can't say his personality was his strong suite. He had a decent sense of humor which is always good. I picked up on his "spin" quite some time ago. It had nothing to do with oil at the time either. By the way, did you guys know he had a Lexus? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Re: Can\'t Believe the Difference!

Mike, I have always done my oil changes at the manuals interval of 5000 miles. The oil comes out black, smells like used oil. Everything inside the engine is nice and clean and with 200K on my truck am happy to report the engine is the one thing that I can really count on. Compression is virtually the same as new. Now if I could get all the other things that don't require oil with the exception of the transmission to last as long, I'd be a really happy truck owner. I'm not happy. /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Re: Can\'t Believe the Difference!

Rat, the answer to the oil question is no I changed @ 3000 mi. & did I mention the oil @ 3000 was trashed /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif, but like I said in my post I found where I could save money & stay out from under my 5 vehicles which saves me time by changing to long drain synthetics . I just purchased 2 ATV'S and the manufacture calls for synthetic , so it appears that that's the trend. Plus wouldn't using synthetics cut down demand on oil ? Isn't that why they say gasoline is prices are so high ?What's a lexus ? isn't that a tractor brand ? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

This is the part of doing oil analysis I don't understand. When 'the numbers' come back 'bad', so what? What's the impact on engine life? If all the additives are depleted, does the oil stop lubricating? Does it mean that instead of my engine lasting 500,000 miles, it will only last 250,000 miles? 200,000 miles? 150,000 miles? IOW, what are the practical impacts?

Re: Can\'t Believe the Difference!

That's a good thing. Bob Skurka is not a feather ruffler that I ever recall seeing. Just a good guy, period, and I don't know him beyond TBN.

Junkman, that simply surprises me.

GSXR, no telling what was at work there. He had his moments when he was on an abrasive tangent and not fully thinking about his replies. But most of us have been there on ocassion. Guess we'll never know. Like others have stated, he was game-on this oil stuff. I learned from him, even if I didn't follow his advice. He'll pop up somewhere else, no doubt to that.

Re: Can\'t Believe the Difference!

Ken, I must admit to using synthetic in my "really good" stuff. My tractor, my ATV and my mower. If it increases their life span I may never know or frankly care, but it does "feel" good just knowing I went the extra step and have something special in there. The car and truck get the regular stuff. You are correct about the longevity issue, very good point. If for no reason other then to increase the change intervals and thus the job that one must do themselves or take the time for others to do, that can be justification for many. I personally don't drive my truck a ton anymore so it may get 2 changes a year at 5000 mile intervals.

If your oil was SHOT...after 3000 miles...look to the engine your running it in as the main culprit! The oil is only partially to blame.

I always find the "dino VS Syn" oil discussions interesting..and also find it interesting that MAKERS or "long duration running engines" ( such as Cat and Cummins) tell owners to FORGET syn oils and use the recommended weight and spec oils they recommend and drain at the intervals they recommend and "all is well". Strange they can build and warranty engines for 450-500,000 miles and yet users of autos feel they have to swap out oil every 3K miles...just to get their engines to run 100,000 miles.

Unless you live in the Sahara desert..OR Antarctica....if you cant find a "dino" oil that will work for your application...SOMETHING IS WRONG! If someone gets a warm and fuzzy feeling from USING Syn oils..all well and good...but it sure makes a person wonder???
