My case was flawed, though not entirely, but I think you may have inadvertently made it.... to a degree. My point really was cloaked (Star Wars again) to hopefully evoke this kind of reply, so to that end I thank you. I thought Skypup might jump in actually and lay it on me really heavy. That's always a good read and that was pounce material. So in all fairness I was baiting the debate to make it a little more interesting and informative. Didn't mean to pawn anybody though. So my sincere apologies if you take any offense. Not your style though.

This is very helpful to the synthetic debate. I don't pretend to have as good an understanding as you do on this. I couldn't have expained it that well as I don't understand it quite to your technical level. I do generally understand it to read it though, as do a good number of us who frequent. Most of us are aware that, for many decades, science had been cracking and reformulating in the labs, many different things that we find naturally occurring. That part of my prior post has some merit. That's what got the early science moving IMO. Break it apart, determine what it is, and try to recreate. So now we can engineer and formulate an incredible array of products that are both virtually identical too and substantially different than those we find as naturally occurring. No sane person would question that. Not even I. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif I'm also aware the dinosaur thing, even though your uncloaking the truth, kinda takes the humor out of that. Also hopefully mitigates to a degree, the Synthetics stalwarts "high science" position, as the opposing counter word "Dino" ain't exactly what it was up till a few minutes ago.

So Dargo, I think we pushed this thing along and some others are having a good time in the process. I really think we can make more headway and get more of us old Dino types, like me admittedly, converted to the "high science" /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif side. Just have to make it a little less technical and a little more real from time to time. Take care and thanks again. The polyalphaolefin polymer is noted as the viscosity modifier but with a sub 100 Kv. I'm not sure which way it's pulling the other chemical components in the formula. Actually that sub 100 Kv is surprising as I associate that particular polymer with plastics, adhesives, laminates, wiring (construction backgroiund) and would be thinking on the order of magnitude, a much higher viscosity. Obviously it can be restructured and modified in a number of ways I wasn't aware, assuming that is the base.

If it is the base, I'm floored. The chemical we are discussing here is a version of the same one's I've been aware of all along? /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif Never tied the two as their properties and applications, as I know them, are rather divergent from oil. More like thick liquids to soft plastics. Who'd.... uh.... thunk. Wouldn't have even thought it could be use as a modifier except for perhaps taking oil bases up the viscosity slope.

Just curious, is there any data anywhere proving that synthetic oil makes your engine last longer ? I am not debating that synthetic oil is better than dino, I agree it is a better lube.

P.S., I'm a "rat". I use both. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif It all depends on the expense of the engine or how long I plan on keeping whatever I'm putting the oil in. Figure this; I have a 236 inline 6 cyl. that I took out of a '62 Chevy (it needed a 502ci engine /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif) that not only never saw synthetic oil, but also never even had an oil filter on it. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif An oil filter was an "option" then. It ran like a well oiled sewing machine. I took the valve cover off and the pan off to check it before I stored it. It had no sludge and showed no noticable or measurable wear. Hmm, how is that?

Slowrev, that is an excellent question. I'm working on a post that touches on that question, but the short answer would be ... a he$$ there is no short answer. In the vast majority of cases dino probably protects every bit as well as synths, and in some cases, like extreme overheating, it might not.

Oddball situations abound - extreme cold, inexperienced operators, "saharan" conditions. I use Amsoil in my tractor, dino in everything else (though that might slowly change), and I sleep like a baby.

I checked their ad out here on TBN and found it very interesting with pretty convincing good qualities. My question is...has anyone signed up for their "dealer" or "preferred customer" thing? Is it worth it?

Rob: I signed up for the preferred customer thing a couple years ago & every year I just renew. I'm not a salesman so I'm not going to get into the dealer part of it. I went that route when I had my Harley Sportster and using the 20w50 MC oil, it made a great difference in how easily it started and "seemed" to run cooler on warm days. I say seemed to run cooler because there was no temperature gauge to go by. You get to save a few bucks by being a preferred customer. The other benefit is that they also sell "liquid organic fertilizer" (Aggrand) which you can purchase using your preferred customer # for some additional savings. I'm started using the organic fertilizer last Spring on my lawn and it seemed to work fairly well.

I do plan to run synth in my own tractor after I purchase one. I'm still lurking here reading all the threads I can to get properly educated before jumping in head first.

I joined the preferred customer plan. $30 CDN per year and the discount pays for it with the amount of stuff I buy. I didn't go the dealer route either - no interest. I just figured since AMSOIL is all I will use now, I might as well get it a bit cheaper.

I haven't picked up the new oil or air filters yet, but will the next time I need to change (not so often now that I'm EXTENDING my drains with cheaper-in-the-long-run-and-better-for-my-engine SYNTHETIC oil)
