Well I ordered two pair of carhartt pants last night.. I got the work duck dungarees from sierra trading post for about $28/each.. I started to try the Dickies, but they didnt offer them in the colors I wanted (dark brown and dark blue).

I chose the duck material over denim/canvas/other material because I wanted it to be briar/thorn resistant.. I have had some denim stuff that allowed the briars to come through and the duck material wont (or shouldnt hehe)..

Thanks for all the advise.. I

I get catalog from this company Duluth every so often.

They sell clothes from firehouse fabrics and such, looks pretty good to me, but I didnt buy anything from them yet.

I'll second Duluth, although I have not purchased their firehose jeans. I do have a cellphone holder from that material that is holding up well. I have purchased their No-Polo shirts and longtail tee's and like them.

I have slowly converted virtually all of my "farm" work clothes over to them.

I generally shop the sales. I picked up about 4 of there long tail pocket tees that were military brown color mismatch. I wear them virtually every day and they are ausome. heavy duty, dont show stains, and love the breast pocket.

I have a pair of firehose cargo's and love them. A set of cargo pants/shorts usually lasts me about 6 months. Ive had these over a year now and they holding up well.

I have 3 or 4 of there various outer wear coats. between fleece, rain coats, wind breakers, hoodies etc. all very well made, holds up well, lives up to advertising.

its certianly a case were you get what you pay for. Costco cargo pants are cheep but usually only last me 6months or less of regular ware. (im really hard on pants, im a big guy)

Most offshore drillers that don't require fire retardant clothing give their hands Dickies. I wear the brown duck Dickies myself. I think for the money they are a better value. Carhartt's good stuff, but they don't hold up any longer offshore. Roughnecks will shred anything in about 6 months. I'm an engineer so mine last until they've been washed so many times in hot water and double soap that they don't fit anymore. Most of the welders out here do wear the heavy denim Carharrt, and a few Dickies.

I've had one pair of the Duluth firehose type pants. They fit and wore well until I accidentally got them soaked with crude oil. Nothing's fit for anything after that.

I would buy two pairs of Dickies for the price of 1 Carhartt. Make sure you try the Dickies on before you buy them. You can take 2 pairs of the same size, in my case 38 waist 34 length and they will fit differently. Sometimes I go through 8 to 10 pairs before I find two or three that fit right. I can wear a 36 waist but the legs and rear are tight, I have to move up to 38's which are a little big in the waist but give me a little more room.

I would say Carhatt quality (kind of like Toyota fit and finish) is a little better than Dickies but will both last about the same number of years.

Dave

I need a good pair of long pants for outside chores.. Both Carhartt and Dickie's have 12 oz duck fabric pants... Does anyone know if they are the same quality?

The Carharts are about $35, while the Dickies are only $17 which makes me wonder...

thanks

Brian
