I am rebuilding the swing cylinders on my 580 CK and have found flow restrictors installed at the 90degree elbows where the hoses connect. The flow restrictors are set in the cylinders and are easily removed. My concern is that they both seem to have been moving between the 90 degree fitting and the seat in the cylinder. I am wondering if when they are reinstalled should I tighten the 90 degree fitting that has a lock nut tight/snug on the flow restrictor or let the restrictor "float"? I have the manual but can't find any reference to how this should fit.

Thanks for the reply. My thought was that the restrictor was to be stationary also but today I tried and experiment. I placed the restrictor in the cylinder and attached a string to it and threaded the string through the elbow. I then screwed the elbow into tne cylinder as far as it could go with the lock nut backed off. I pulled on the string and the restrictor moves about 3/16". The reason I questioned this at first was that there seem to be wear marks on the restrictor and the elbow. I asked the mechanics at Case but none remember an old machine like my 580CK. I was hoping that someone might have a service manual that has a better description of how this should work 034.jpg035.jpg036.jpg.

Since you have two cylinders the restrictors only work in one direction and allow a free flow function in the other. This allows for meter out control to prevent rapid swing movement and a more controlled swing movement.

When I worked for CaseIH we put one-way flow restrictors on cylinders on several different occasions. It is much cheaper than a separate fitting, plus if people don't know it it there they will probably leave it alone. ;) But I will say that the one you show is much more expensive than the ones I used. We used them mostly for speed control on heavily loaded cylinders that were pushing against gravity, but in your case I'm guessing they help prevent cavitation.

As a side note you may run across an orifice with a small piece of wire, or similar, in it. I have never used them but I hear that the "jiggle pin" prevents debris from plugging the hole.

I thought the O-ring was in a fixed position.

I thought they floated also, but came across this.

It looks like some of the restrictor have a spring associated with them.
